Camping around Mammoth Lakes, CA

We are planning a trip in early August to the Mammoth Lakes, CA, area. We plan to visit Devil's Postpile NM and the Bristlecone Pine forest, and go back through Yosemite. The Yosemite part is easy as we will camp at Tuolumne Meadows, but the Mammoth Lakes part is not so easy. We are looking at the 3 NF campgrounds near Mammoth Lakes, Shady Rest and friends, and found some also around the lakes just south of Mammoth Lakes, Twin Lakes, Lake Mary, Coldwater, and more. Any recommendations? Campgrounds and specific sites would be appreciated.

You are loaded with camping options in that area. Red's Meadow is right next to Devil's postpile and there are about 5 campgrounds in that small valley. Lake Mary is very nice and there is also a lot of camping near there. About 15 miles north toward the entrance to Yosemite we like to camp on the June Lake loop at Silver Lake...no hookups but there are other campgrounds on the loop with hook ups. Just pick any one. Everyone's needs are different so you are going to have trouble getting a site recommendation. They are all good.

I like Twin Lakes Campground - fishing, bike paths, hiking, little store with pay showers, all close by. Most of the perimeter sites are good choices. Don't be surprised by afternoon thunderstorms.

We ended up in New Shady Rest campground just outside of Mammoth Lakes, CA. It is one of 3 campgrounds adjacent to each other. Must be plenty of demand. This site was convenient to all the places we wanted to go. We drove through the lake campgrounds and felt that New Shady Rest was the best for us, with Twin Lakes a second and had the extra benefit of showers available at the store. Showers are supposedly available across the street at Mammoth Mountain RV Park but we just showered every other day in our trailer to conserve water. New Shady Rest has a dump station but the park has outsourced it and it costs $10. We had great Verizon cell reception. We would camp again here.
