Escape-less escape to Yellowstone

Hope you don’t mind but I wanted to share a few photos of Yellowstone in winter. It is my favorite park, and I always wanted to visit in winter. We spent the last week of January at Mammoth Hot Springs and Old Faithful. We did not try to camp.

OK, so the Mammoth NPS campground was open and there was a Class A motor home in one site and a small dome tent in another. But…I gotta admit…I’ve turned soft in my old age. The only lodges open in winter are at Mammoth Hot Springs, and the Snow Lodge at Old Faithful. We spent a few days at each.

You can drive to Mammoth, and the road is open across the north of the park to Cooke City MT, through the Lamar Valley. None of the other roads are plowed, so transportation is by snow coach only. It’s a completely different experience in winter, with only a few hundred hotel rooms and cabins. If you can…go! The Escape will wait for you at home.

Very nice, something I'd like to do someday. A good friend goes to Yellowstone about twice each year. He says he hasn't been there in June, July and August for years. He always goes for a week in the spring and then either in the mid fall or the dead of winter like you did. He loves seeing young bears in the spring.

It's a special place. Eventually the Park Service will figure out how to limit traffic in the park. Zion, a much smaller park, found the perfect solution. But, even in the summer if you get off the boardwalks surrounding the thermal features you can find some quiet. Go see the geyser basins early in the morning or in the evenings, and hike some trails during the day.

Yellowstone is a special place anytime of the year but it is spectacular in the winter. We spent time there on our trip to pick up our Escape in 2014 and hope to return for another winter trip (without the trailer!)
Cheryl's photos are in one of the "Featured" galleries on her web site.
