Lake MacBride

Drove down to the Amish Community about 45 miles south of us yesterday to buy some dried food for use during the impending pandemic. On the way back made a little detour to Lake MacBride state park near Solon Iowa where we have camped in the primitive campground many times. This is a hillside campground on the eastern end of the 650 acre lake. There is a modern campground on the west end too but we haven’t camped there.
$6 a night. There’s water in hydrants available and both a pit toilet and a modern new restroom. There’s shade but open enough for solar to work well. The water is available from mid April through mid October but the area is open for camping all winter too. FREE firewood, some sites reservable ($4) and many first come first serve. Lakeside sites same cost. Popular on weekends but not many there during the week. About 20 miles north of Interstate 80, take Highway 1 towards Solon Iowa. All hard surface and does not flood. Here’s a few pictures.

My wife and I spent a week at Lake MacBride State Park in the Spring a few years back
Lots of things to see in the area and I cannot say enough nice things about Lake MacBride SP
The campground hosts like most Iowans were extremely friendly , outgoing and helpful
For us it was well worth the trip to Solon Iowa and we plan on returning .

I posted about this campground because there has been discussion on inexpensive yet somewhat serviced camping of late. You can stay two weeks for a total of $ 88. Or $6.28 per day including the reservation fee. And in 14 days you could easily see three attractions a day, many free, and not drive over 40 miles round trip each day. The fully serviced Coralville Reservoir COE Sugar Bottom campground is only about three or four miles from Lake MacBride but of course is a little more money.
Thanks for the endorsement Steve, Iowa works hard to be more than a drive through state. The current theory is to put more folks outdoors and charge less rather than charging fewer and fewer outdoor people, hunting, fishing, camping more and more. 2020 is the 100 year anniversary of our State parks and ever progressive, our newly appointed DNR Chief is a lady..

Thanks for the heads up Dave, both of these look nice for a quick stop for us on the way to Osoyoos. I always try to make the first stop about 1/3 of the trip out to get a big jump on things...

I used to camp and fish Lake Anita often when I lived in Council Bluffs. I set a park record there once when they first started selling campfire wood. I asked the girl how much I could get for three dollars. All you can carry” she said. My “friend” loaded me up on my arms, shoulders and over my head. I staggered around the first turn and dumped the load along the road. While I recovered, Paul went for the Radio Flyer coaster wagon. The next week they had built a rack that held about 9 pieces but I didn’t need any , I still had enough from the week before. There’s a nice class of crappies in that lake right now since they renovated it a few years ago. It’s just a few miles off of I 80. Cass county Iowa I believe.

What is 'pre-planning'?
You mean, you haven't thought about it at all?
Never understood the concept.

If you would read Outdoor Recreation in America by Clayne R Jensen you would have a better grasp on how folks assemble their thoughts when contemplating an outdoor recreation experience. It is the definitive work on planning, traveling, experiencing and remembering your experiences and is in its sixth printing. I have a first edition from the late 60s. And a degree in Resource Development for Outdoor Recreation.

Wow I wish NJ would follow your lead. I pay $20/night and a couple dollar online registration service fee for a basic site at a state campground with no utilities. Picnic table and fire ring is all you get. There are a couple of water hydrants scattered around and a decent bathroom. Dump station too. Good news is my favorite place has a 22 feet maximum for trailers so keeps the big boys out.

Are you insinuating that any part of my last post is not true? Please let me know how much you’d like to wager. Make it worth your while. And a chance for at least one see and raise.

Some people fancy their thoughts as very pertinent to any discussion. I would caution against suggesting any immanent pandemic. That is speculative to say the least.

Some have pertinent thoughts, some not. Shall we have a poll?

Iowa Dave ; I hope that you will continue to regale us with stories of Iowa , your childhood , your outdoor experiences and your observations on life . I consider you the Garrison Keillor of the Escape community .
Few people can weave a story and hold people’s attention with just their words
I look forward to sitting around a campfire with you this summer and spreading a little BS !

Thanks for the kind words. I hate dead air on the radio and in conversations and have dedicated my life to preventing it.
