Michigan - Marquette City Tourist Park

We've been camping here along the Dead River for two nights. It's a city run park with large sites and lots of tall trees, but not much privacy except for some sites at the end of the loops that are deep inside the trees. There's a small beach and the swimming is good. Lake Superior is literally around the corner, but we don't have bikes and we've stayed hitched up.

We have full hookups, but not all sites do. For us this is a rest stop as we head back east and it's one I recommend. Bath houses are clean and due to the trees, it's been as comfortable as possible, given the heat.

We stopped at this campground on our way west last year. Nice campground, and Marquette is an interesting little place... We found a nice restaurant/brew pub for dinner (Vierling) and wandering around the down town, we ran into the picture below... Had to ask a local what it was...

Did you make reservations or is it like many city parks - pull in that day and see what is available?

I am thinking of heading to UP this fall.

We made reservations the night before -- there wasn't a whole lot available and I think the weekend might have been full up -- Maybe it is different in the fall, but I would guess that people come to see the leaves?

It's where trains loaded with taconite (iron ore) pellets were unloaded and the pellets were then loaded into great lakes ore boats for shipment to steel mills in Ohio, Illinois, etc. using the chutes seen on the sides. You can still see four sets of rails on top of the structure. The "bridge" to access the loading facility is gone. Google "Marquette Ore Dock" for photos of what it used to look like.

I was there once when they were loading a ship. It was quite impressive and noisy. They simply opened the bottom of the rail cars and let gravity do its thing.
My daughter spent four years at Northern Michigan University in Marquette. We loved coming up there to visit.
"Anatomy of a Murder" was partially filmed in Marquette.

One more thing - fhere is a really nice food co-op in Marequette where we stocked up on groceries for the next few days. Organic vegetables and grass fed meat -- the place is huge. Store made gluten free bread.
