The 'Taos Box' is a class IV to V, expert only run.
I can believe that! I was in good hands, the 'TX River Rats' included many seasoned and prudent white-water experts, they were looking forward to 'running the box' yet again, a common first stop for many of their trips to western rivers travelling from Texas.
I would recommend Goulding Resort RV Park in Monument Valley it's a good sam park and it sits amongst the rock formations you see from the KOA park it's a beautiful park with lots of hiking trails
I agree with Tim. While the Monument Valley Navajo areas are currently closed due to Covid (check here for opening) the area has some wonderful hikes and some of the most photographic ruins I've visited. An easy 1 mile hike (mostly flat) to House on Fire ruin, and a bit longer & steeper to Fallen Roof Ruin off Cigarette Springs Road.
There are many opportunities for free or inexpensive dry camping throughout the area.
