Exclamation The Best Camping Screen House Tents When Away

My wife and I would like a screened in tent so that the bugs don't get to us while we sit outside. We are just a little concerned with getting one that is quality that doesn't let any of the bugs in.

We don't want to use chemicals to keep the mosquitos away so this is the biggest qualification.

I've tried to find places like this but they don't talk about how effective they are against mosquitos and bugs. Thanks in advance.

If you could mention the model that works well for you that would be fantastic.

Welcome to our molded fiberglass forum. Although different trailer, we use outside shade and screen shelters. Clam shelters seem to be popular here as well as some other brands.

Inside a tent isn't outside.

The Clam can be hot in the sun, is big, bulky & heavy. Just as quick erecting but lighter, less bulky and expensive are Coleman Instant Screenhouses. As effective in regards to bugs as anything, reasonably well made and well designed. I sold off a different brand and acquired one of the Coleman's. They come in several sizes.

We have both the big Clam and the Gazelle. The Clam is just too big and bulky, so only goes to the yearly family campout.

Otherwise, in the bug season we take the Gazelle.

In the winter we leave both home.

Enjoy,

Perry

What I like about the clam is you can make it somewhat water proof

We have a couple.

One is the Eureka Screen Room Hex XL. I like it, well made, screen and you can add panels to add privacy or stop the rain. Downside is it takes 2 to put up. We have eaten dinner in this tent in the driving rain and only a bit of mist came in.

The other is one we bought from Canadian Tire, Broadstone I think, it's heavy and bulky, low quality, again 2 person setup. Both do good in the wind.

I see many talk about the Clam. Not sure how they would do in the wind and rain.

How well do they work, if your diligent and keep the zippers done up, they work fine. When the kids go in and out and leave the zippers open, well you get mosquitos. We burn a mosquito candle for light and to keep the buggers away.

Welcome to the Escape Forum.

Just spray 3M waterproofing on the Gazelle and it will be waterproof. Been using 3M Scotchgard Outdoor Water Shield for a couple of decades.

Enjoy,

Perry

Good Question,

Our Clam is great once erected, but too bulky and cumbersome and takes up too much room in the truck.

Pretty much my experience with the largest Clam. Fits nicely over a standard Forest Service picnic table with room for a few folding chairs. Reasonable protection in a light rain. Ground flaps keep out low flying bugs. Still, the bugs manage to get by following the people - little sneaks.

But the downside, folded up it is longer than the bed of my Toyota Tacoma, although it does fit at an angle. Somewhat heavy. Two people are not required, but helpful to set up and take down. Needs some external guy lines and sizable tent stakes when wind is expected. For that reason we don't use it when changing sites frequently, but for multiple days in one place - great.

Previous shelter tents - Colemen, perhaps not available any more - required 3 people to erect by placing unstable poles on the inside. Plus the same instability in a wind. Not recommended.

We have the large, 12 foot, Clam screen shelter and are very happy with it. Yes, it is bulky and a bit heavy, but it is very easy to set up and take down, is solidly-built, and stands up well to wind and rain. And once zipped keeps the bugs and flying critters out.

We had it with us for a week of beach camping at Cape Hatteras National Seashore last season and it easily survived two late day thunder squalls that flattened tents and sent pop-up campers to the nearest hotels. Bad storms those days. I had stakes in the corners and three or four guy lines out, and they held. Of course, it ended up sitting in 4 inches of water until things dried up.

We at first carried it in the truck bed, laid diagonally across the top of the other gear, but then I discovered that it just fits through the rear hatch of our 19 and now we carry it inside, flat across the back of the trailer. We also got a set of the optional wind/rain panels but haven't bothered/needed to use them yet.

I use the Clam Quick Set, sets up in less than 3min. Secure it with tiedown straps. Weighs 35lbs in case, length in case 75". Also bought the 5 panels for privacy. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Clam-Quic...004009&veh=sem

Even better is the 303 Fabric Protector (not to be confused with the 303 Vinyl protector). I have a nearly 30 year old canvas top convertible, 303 will make water bead up and run away from the top for about a year. You have to spray it on and let it dry for like 24 hours before folding up, this is best done on a sunny day in dry weather.

I have an old canvas tarp that we used to "oil" it occasionally to keep it waterproof. I think it was linseed oil.
