Zion Flash Flood
For those heading to Zion - 6/29/21 (some rough language) Looks like most of the problem was in the parking area.

I hope no one was caught in that narrow canyon.

This seemed like the main entrance visitor center. It’s not a very narrow valley by any means. And, the main campground is right next to it. The town of Springfield is not too far either.

Even as a young adult I did not have an appreciation for the effects of a “flash flood”. Probably owing to where I was raised in relatively flat country.
My first trip to Colorado and the Thompson Canyon where a flash flood claimed lives and the resulting signage way up on the canyon walls advised “Climb at least this far if a flash flood occurs” brought it home for me Later in my professional life, working around detention basins, sizing culverts, tile and drainage ways I got an appreciation for the power of water even in our relatively flat country.
Best slogan and advice that I’ve learned is:
“Turn Around , Don’t Drown. Not a perfect rhyme but fine advice.
Consider the terrain when choosing a campsite and look up to assess the condition of trees overhead. They don’t call those bad limbs “widow makers” for no reason.

Yes! Keep an eye out for flash floods in August. August is Utah's monsoon season. They get a large chunk of rain during August.

I was referring to the narrow canyon not far away from the visitors center.

Apparently, most of the damage was not from the river, but 1" of local rain in under one hour. The Virgin river was barely above the hiking cut off of 150 cu ft per second for the 29th, and is well below it for the rest of the previous week.
According to the park alerts, things are back to normal although they are still doing some clean up on SR 9.
