2012 Window Sealant

Hi all! Long time no post! I am doing some major maintenance to my 2012 Escape 19. The window sealant above the windows is a bit cracked in places. is it better to try to remove it or just add something over it? If removal is needed, how would I go about that? any recommendations on what to use to reseal the tops of the windows??
Thanks all!
Kris

I suggest you contact the factory to see what they are using currently, perhaps better than what you had in the past?

I don’t know what ETI used in 2012. Generally you can cut out the sealant, clean up the opening and use ProFlex or similar caulk to reinstall. Generally, going over the top of bad caulk is not a good idea. My 2021 uses a gasket and no caulk on the windows.

Back when Escape had a repair department they repaired our leaking rear window by doing exactly as described above

Getting 11 years out of the sealant is doing pretty well!

In 2018 our 2007 17B had no leaks except one of the front windows, the rubber holding the glass shrank. I took out the rubber and used black RTV automotive gasket maker mostly because it was sitting on my toolbox already open. you couldn't tell the difference.

The window frame to the body. Unless it was leaking, I would let it be. To do it properly, it's a big job.

Our 2014 E19 has a heavy “bead” of sealant over the top edge of the window trim that has discolored and gotten chalky on several of windows. With a plastic putty knife and some paint thinner I was able to remove it then I resealed using clear proflex. I used masking tape to make a clean line on the window trim and the body ( putting much less sealant on the window than the factory did). It looks much better and doesn’t leak. I need to do a couple of more windows this season. I won’t lie to you, it’s a bit of a pita.
