2014 and older owners

Checked the roof caulk when I put the trailer away in early Sept, it was fine.

Down here in AZ, had the bathroom start to leak, looks to be coming in from between the bath and the outer wall, the channel does not fill up, water shows up below the frame only.

Checked the caulk for the waste tank vent over the bathroom, it's pulled away from the plastic vent pipe, still stuck good to the fiberglass.

Just a heads up, check your caulk.

Thanks for the heads up Bob. Yep, checking ALL the caulking is part of my Spring maintenance.

Sounds like you might have a bunch of caulking to redo, Bob.

This is a great reminder to everyone, that just because things were once good that something might change with time. Loose fasteners are another item.

Like many we check all the caulk we know about each spring and then again mid summer. I get a new tube of proflex that costs about $10. I’ve tried to seal the tube after use with a screw in the nozzle and a good tape job and some caulk from the tube. Seems like it always gets hard before I need it again. Last summer I opened a tube and when done I used the food saver to suck the air out and seal it in a bag. Eric Thomson said this works for him. I’ll be checking the caulk in another few days when it warms up a little more. Hope I saved a buck. If not, I’ll just get a new tube. Here’s a plus, the RV dealer I use is in the small town of Walford Iowa. He’s located on a street that has a good tavern on the other end. So down I go about three and hit the happy hour after I get my caulk.

Reasoning

It’s like perpetual motion. And a sophisticated form of multitasking. Did I mention the name of the establishment is “Wild Hogs” it’s a quiet place frequented by those well behaved Harley Davidson owners.
The guy behind the counter at the RV place says to me “So these Escapes, Tell me about them”. I needed two handles for my grey and black tanks as they both had an end broken off from road debris. He only had one handle so he opened a valve package and took one off an assembly. Charged me for just two handles. Pretty decent.

Is it possible to post a pic? I’m not understanding where “waste tank vent over bathroom is “, is this on the roof?

Can't, or don't know how, to post a pic from my phone.

Yes the vent is on the roof, at least on the classic 5.0ta's. 4 or 5" white cap, another for the gray tank is over the kitchen.

Anything on the roof deserves attention to make sure it is sealed. The little round domes you find will be plumbing vents.

those little plastic domes (plumbing vents) are pretty fragile and I have replaced both of mine. The plastic get brittle and just a little bump and they might break, especially the tops.

They are fragile! I apply regular coats of 303 and use a very light touch, but it is only a matter of time.......

I broke two of the plastic vent caps while sweeping snow from the roof of my 19' last year. Didn't take much of a bump at all and they simply shattered and fell apart. They are a fairly inexpensive item, so it would not hurt to keep a spare or two on hand.

Looks like there is the complete vent replacement and just the cap that slips inside the vent pipe available at amazon. That cap does not look too secure, anyone have issues with it disappearing while under tow?

If the vent caps are broken or the seal has failed, and they are the type recently used by Escape, it seems like a good opportunity to change to a better design, as discussed in Electrical gremlins and plumbing stacks...

The Ventline V2049 (or similar) that I mentioned and Doug showed in that discussion doesn't just seal better; it has a post and hole that allow the removable cap portion to be screwed it place - it's not generally necessary, but reduces the chance of accidental loss. In my case, hitting them while shoveling snow off of the roof is the most common cause of cap loss. I don't know about really long term reliability or hot climate use of this vent - the ones that I installed have only been in use for 12 years so far.

Why not use the metal one, that should last a lifetime?

Good idea. On our Casita, I even tried the heavier gauge plastic one, very thick plastic, but it gave up the ghost also. Yup, I'm trying the metal one next.

Hi: padlin... Nothing worse than going off half "Caulked". I had to redo my upper tail lights in Jan. after a Florida downpour. Thank heavens it's the one over my D Wife's head. Started to drip while she was reading her eye pad!!! Alf
