battery terminal corrosion
Hi All:
I have corrosion on the + terminals of my 6V interstates. Have googled how to remove corrosion with baking soda but wanted to hear how you experts do it. Please advise. TIA

A small wire brush and baking soda or Coke, baking soda to neutralize the acid and the brush to clean them, rinse well. I would suggest spraying with battery sealer when dry. There are 74,700 Youtube videos on the subject, take your pick.

Clean the connections well with a wire brush and hook the cables back up. After that, coat the terminals with a generous blob of bearing grease making sure no metal is left exposed. Works beautifully

FYI:
Any spatter will corrode, or make nice little holes in your clothes.

Dielectric grease would be a whole lot better as it does not conduct. Every trailer owner should have a bottle to protect the 7 way plug and socket as well as any other connections that might get damp.

I don't get dielectric grease, you would think something that doesn't conduct smeared on electrical connections would interfere with the pin to socket connections.

proper electrical connectors are 'gas tight', so they squeeze the grease out of the way.

When I was a kid we watched a parade from the shady side of a gas station. The owners son, tired of standing, sat on a junk battery. Scratch that pair of jeans. One of the few times I ever learned from someone else’s mistake.

Yeah, that's what I thought, and that made me hesitant to use it. But it works, though.

The reason dielectric grease is used on electrical connections is that you don’t want conductivity on a mult-connection plug like the RV plug. Actually on regular batteries with standard posts I use the felt washers soaked in 90 weight gear oil. After installing the felt washers I will have no corrosion for ten years or more. You just need a barrier to keep the acid off the lead.

Bless your heart, yes there are lots of YouTube videos etc but some just spray a dilute mix of baking soda/water on corrosion then wash off w hose & dont dc the connections. Others use a paste after 1st disconnecting terminals (neg 1st then + reversing this when rehooking up) then Washing w hose. Wondered if someone could post a stepwise guide on doing this correctly. Thank you
