Generator for Escape
We have a A/C unit that draws 6.6amps and was wondering if anyone had/has experience int what type generator that would work to run it and some other basic functions of the trailer.. Hopefully something small.. Honda EU2000i (looks like it handles 13.3A) but real-life experience is always better than specs..

Re: Generator for Escape
I have a Honda EU2000i generator and 2006 Escape 17 footer with the current model year wall mounted air conditioner; my tests and camping experience shows the Honda EU2000i is a good match for this combination. I also installed a 950 watt microwave (with turntable) on top of the wardrobe. The following tests were run at 4,200 feet and the EU2000i was stock without a high atlitude modification kit.
I ran the test with the trailer battery not fully charged. I did not run the refrigerator as I would use propane while dry camping, not the generator. I left the generator in economy mode for most of the tests.
Most tests were run with all internal and external lights on, the battery charging, the fantastic fan set to high and the cook top exhaust fan on. To get the trailer nice and warm so the AC would cycle, I turned on the furnace. It was mighty warm inside the trailer, the kids were confused or perhaps dazed by the heat. To keep my beer from suffering, I quickly downed it. Then the fun began.
With the furnace blasting merrily along, turning on the AC resulted in the generator going off-line. Having the furnace and AC on simultaneously is not a rational combination, but hey, it was fun to see which was more powerful. Heat beat cool.
With the furnace off and AC and everything but the microwave on, the generator will operate at a speed higher than economy but less than maximum. The AC can be cycled off and on with a corresponding decrease and increase in generator speed.
With the AC on, the microwave can be used at the highest power setting. The microwave and AC were cycled off and on in every possible combination. I turned the generator economy mode off for these tests to cut down on generator speed transients.
All in all I am pleased with the Honda generator. It will power my 2006 Escape under all normal operating conditions.

Re: Generator for Escape
Has anyone used the EU2000i with the roof mounted AC currently on the escape 5, but soon to be on other models?

Re: Generator for Escape
Hi:All...Sorry we do not have a generator. Have only used the A/C once to chill out the 5.0...had to turn it off as it was sooo cold my wife*******. It is a 7100BTU Dometic Brisk Air and with the insulation qualty of the trailer we only really use the MaxxFan...

Re: Generator for Escape
Not positive, but the Honda 2,000W generator ( I'm guessing that model ) is $1,299 at Arrow Equipment in North Van ( reg. price ). They expect the price to go up about $100 in the next couple months. 1,000W is $899 and expected to go up as well.
Owner of Arrow is a friend of mine, but the price is standard.

Re: Generator for Escape
Here in Calgary they seem to pretty much follow the MSRP which is listed at $1,599. LINK

Re: Generator for Escape
Checked with my buddy Tom at Arrow Equipment. He says Honda only sells the one model of 2000W generator in Canada and that he sells it for $1,299. He also said it appears they are holding off on the price increase.
So, if you are in the market, you can now tell the sales guy what you are willing to pay - $1,299.

Re: Generator for Escape
If anyone may be interested. The following link is for a Yamaha dual or tri-fuel generator, ie. it will work on gas/propane/natural gas. Not sure if it's available in Canada?

Re: Generator for Escape
Well apparently the new Carrier low profile 13,500 BTU air conditioner draws 13.4 amps
and the Honda EU2000ic generator can supply a continuous 13.3 amps so looks like it might be close....
Might have to wait until my trailer arrives, take it to the Honda dealer and then try one.
Sure hope it will work as they are nice generators.

Re: Generator for Escape
Well there apparently is good news on the horizon for suitcase style generators.
I was at the Happy Trails parts department yesterday and they have a new
generator available and it turns out 2800 watts just what is needed for running
air conditioners, it has the same eco or smart throttle that the Honda does
along with a pull out handle and 2 back wheels like a suitcase.
Runs at 60db at 7 meters and weights in at 66 lbs.
The parts person will be fining out more and getting one in soon,
will post more once I see it for myself.
ps:- Best part, he though the price would be around $1200.00

Re: Generator for Escape
Just got back from Happy Trails RV parts department, the fellow I
was dealing with didn't have the generator in yet, but he had a brochure
and I got a copy. The new 2800 watt model is made by RVPRO should retail for around $1200.00.
I figure it will run the air conditioner, lights and water pump all at once.
ps:- sorry about the photocopy quality

Re: Generator for Escape
Doug, it is not a lot bigger then the Honda 2000, but 20 lbs heavier. It is smaller in depth and height then the Yamaha 2400, and about the same weight. It definitely looks worthy of consideration, especially if one wants to run bigger loads on it. Do the have a web site listed, I can't find anything searching.
One thing I am contemplating doing is to mount the propane bottles side by side and building a storage bin as light as possible right above them for a gen set. The idea is to keep the tongue weight down as much as possible. It will all depend on the final tongue weight of the 19. I am allowed up to 450 lbs.

Re: Generator for Escape
Hi Jim, no website yet according to the parts fellow
But it will be distributed through Danzy Distributors.
He thought they will be shipping in about 1 month.
Sorry thats all I could find out.
Oh by the way it has a handle that pulls out of the front
and wheels on the back so you can wheel it around like
a suitcase.

Re: Generator for Escape
Are you going to have outside front access to storage under the dinette? If so, will side by side propane tanks interfere? Will the frame be longer in front on the 19' than the 17'? While There's no generator now in the Suite Escape's future, it would be something nice to know.

Re: Generator for Escape
I'd feel a lot more comfortable with your choice if I knew who actually makes it and I knew more about parts and service.
It could just be a re-labeled Honda or Yamaha, which would be good. On the other hand, if parts and service are hard to get, I'd avoid it.
I'm wrestling with spending $900 on a Honda 1000 or $1300 on a 2000. I have no air or microwave. All I need is to be able to charge the battery to run lights and the furnace fan and the 1000 is enough for that. On the other hand, the 2000 could come in useful during a power outage at home and it can run power tools, if that is important. I got a chart from Arrow Equipment that lists the draw for all kinds of appliances and power tools. Many of these require a lot of power upon start-up, so you can't just go by the running power requirement.
I'm gonna see if I can locate a digital version or site.
I think in an extended power outage in winter, I would move into the Toad and heat and light would be enough. In summer, I'd want to keep the fridge and freezer going, but I can't remember an extended power outage in summer in 26 years of living here.
