Kidde recalls 4.6 million fire extinguishers in U.S., Canada
Ten Forward is in a storage yard. Does anyone know what brand ETI installs at time of manufacture? I know I've got one of these recalled extinguishers in my Scamp.
For more information and a link to the website to see if yours is on the recall list: Kidde recalls 4.6 million fire extinguishers in U.S., Canada - CBS News

These are disposable models. So, you'll end up replacing them soon if you have them. Any dry chemical fire extinguishers don't tend to function well after sitting a long time.

Even if they're not refillable, they can last 5 to 10 years -- provided that the gauge is still in the green area. They should still be checked at least annually to make sure that's the case. You can give them a good shake once or twice a year to help keep the dry chemical from solidifying at the bottom from having sat.
The recall was for a faulty nylon valve.

I seem to recall a previous thread on fire extinguishers, either here or on FGRV, that shaking the bottle doesn't do anything because the powder immediately settles. Besides, if you need to use it, your hands will be shaking. Believe me.

Had to use 2 dry chem extinguishers (5 or more years old) when the house caught fire, banged them on the floor sideways a few times first, and they worked great. Still in my 1902 house. I have 2 extinguishers on every level, in the basement, garage, and another one under the kitchen sink.

Thanks Donna!
Just checked ours, it is not a Kidde. It is a First Alert. Don't know if ETI uses different brands....

That's true that it settles immediately Glenn. The idea of shaking it a few times a year is to prevent caking -- which can happen if the extinguisher is stationary for a long period of time.

Most marinas require boats to have insurance and meet marine safety regs which specify the number and type of fire extinguishers. Boats get a safety sticker showing they're current. The fire extinguisher company that attends inspection days takes dry chemical extinguishers and turns them upside down and gives them a couple of whacks with a rubber mallet and you're good to go.
