Shelters or garage building recommendations-Calif

Hello,

I am moving soon to a new home and my Escape 19, currently housed in my barn will be needing a new shelter. I've searched the internet looking at RV garages, and shelters and I'm bewildered by the choices. My ideal would be an enclosed structure, but not really sure I need that. I've found the city permits are pretty liberal in what they will let you build as long as it meets the set backs.

So, looking for company recommendations and what you have found is a good fit for your escape. I will be in the east SF bay area so need a company that sells in or to California.

I'll be hiring someone to build it, so any advice, recommendations and wisdom is appreciated about that too.

What are the things that I must have and what "extras" do you feel just make life easier. I wish I could say that money is no object, but, sigh, there is a budget. Not meager, but it is there.

Thanks so much!

Mary

I have two suggestions. As you have already done check on permits but specifically talk to the building inspector so there will be no surprises. You most likely will have to comply with wind, seismic and snow load specs. Also, your local building supply might have "kits" and have a list of recommended contractors.

California may have a ban because RV shelters are carcinogenic. I would take Farther's advice and ignore 'out of state' suggestions.

As one who has had a few temporary shop shelters that are still in use, I'd recommend staying away from tarp or fabric roofs. Even though I live in Alaska where the UV exposure is surely less than California … spend the extra money and put down a metal or plywood roof.

After over thirty years on my temporary tarp roof shelters, I have my PhD in Tarpology.

I have not. Sheesh, that was almost a year ago.

Serious research will be forthcoming during the isolation. I have a small sturdy woodshed that is no longer used for wood storage since I took out the wood stove about 10 years ago. It is well anchored..i am thinking of taking the roof and sides off and using the frame of three 4x4 pressure treated entry supports as a partial anchor for the carport. Will keep you posted here.

Cover options

Make sure you budget to put a 30 amp RV service so
You can plug the trailer in. Make whatever you build wide enough that you can get around the trailer front, back, sides.
If you pour a slab you might want to consider putting achors in for protection against high winds or theft .
We went with a metal building 24X32 with 12 ft sidewalks and a 10 X18 overhead door. 8 ft apron outside. My brother (licensed electrician before retirement) wired it for me. People told me that I’d soon say the building was too small but it’s not. I keep my boat, Mower and lawn implements in there too and can deploy the awning to dry it if I come in wet. It really keeps your trailer clean and shiny and the battery is always charged.

New Holland TC 40D diesel with 17LA loader. 1,000 hours. Bought it used when my blower would not cut the wind packed snow out of the driveway. Bought 11 years ago with 892 hours so you can tell I don’t use it much. But it’s ready when I need it.

Our 19 Shelter

Here is what we did. We live in Central California on a court. You can see the front as viewed from the street and from our side yard. The roof is Foamed Polycarbonate Corrugated Roof Panel. (Metal roofing would bother our neighbors during the rain). We used heavy duty lattice for the sides. We had our contractor neighbor build this for us and are very pleased with the outcome. It does get dusty with the valley winds, but it is protected from the hot sun.

You don't need 30 amps, unless you're going to run the air conditioner. you can run everything else in the trailer on 120 volt 15 amps. Just use a 15 to 30 pigtail.

Yes, 15 or 20 amp circuits are all that is needed. That is what I have been using for 15 years, located on the garage exterior.

30 Amps

Since we wired our building ourselves and we have an adjacent building with a 150 panel we could conveniently access, we ran two circuits, a 20 and a 30 amp, into the building in conduit. The additional cost was minimal.
When we load the trailer for a trip on a summer day Rita flips the AC on and is able to work in the cool trailer. In addition if i am working on something and need to cool off, its nice to duck into the Escape and get something cold to drink out of the refrigerator that we precoool on AC before loading and switching over. A cool dark trailer with a cold one against my flat head always makes me realize why I worked 50 summers, my mantra for these days is " They don't have it like this in Prague".
