Our 5.0

Hi Folks: We took our first trip since returning from Chilliwack. We went to Cape Disapppointment Park on the Long Beach penninsula in Washington. Nice place on the Washington coast - good facilities and great location. Although it rained most of the time ( goes with living here in the Northwest ) , we really enjoyed our stay. Can't say enough about how happy we are with our new trailer - such a great design and craftmanship.

Re: Our 5.0

Hi All - Our Frontier is a King Cab with the standard six foot bed. It tows really well and is a good fit for the 5.0. That is a wonderful bridge. You may be interested in an annual event. It's called the Great Columbia Crossing in which they limit the bridge to one lane of traffic on that day and allow walkers / runners to cross the bridge. It's a fun day and a good way to experience the Columbia up close at that point where it meets the Pacific.

Re: Our 5.0

I like the extra vent up front too! Would give nice ventilation when not using any forced air.
Of course, I couldn't do that now, what with my star gazing modification that Jim did!

Re: Our 5.0

Good looking rig. 8)

A couple of questions:
Did you have the hitch installed in Chilliwack?
How far can the Nissan turn before the nose of trailer touches the cab?

Thanks,

Bill

Re: Our 5.0

Tammy arranged for our hitch in Chilliwack, and they were very efficent!
You can do a 90 degree if you had to, but 45 is a normal angle with no problem.

Re: Our 5.0

Hi Bill - we also had our hitch installed in Chilliwack at a local place arranged by Tammy. As Hokie mentioned, very efficient and completed the same day we picked up our trailer. We have no problems with the cab hitting the trailer while driving and turning. When backing up into a spot , we would hit the cab if we turn too far.

Hi: JerryS... I am picking up our new tug today. A 2010 Nissan Frontier SE 4X4 Crew Cab Long Bed. Just wondering with yours did the hitch go directly over the axle or 2" forward as per Nissan? How much deflection is there in the truck when the trailer is loaded on and is the pin box on the trailer extended out fully?
We are going to have to change our whole setup from the full size Sierra so all bets are off as to adjustment of the components. Alf

Re: Our 5.0

Heh Alf....can't wait to see pics of your new Frontier! I'll have to check my hitch too, but I'm pretty sure it's right over the axle...but could you really tell if it's 2"? Yep, the rear end does depress some, but not a lot...I'll have to hitch and measure...guess it depends on how much I'm carrying on the rear bumper (bikes) and on the rear dinette (chairs, stove, etc) which would lessen the hitch weight. Either way, it pulls GREAT! (except on concrete hiways!!!! Those seams get all three axles oscillating at different times and it could make you seasick!!!!!!!!)

Re: Our 5.0

Hi: HokieEscape...Dan WOW I just took a snap in the garage. YIKES!!! It just fits. Went to the Ins. Co. and experienced the turning radius...what a surprise!!! At 139.9" wheelbase you can't expect Ferarri like turns.
As for the "Concrete chatter" I'm used to the GMC's shortbox gallop so I won't turn green.
Mon. AM. I'm going to have the hitch put in but the trailer is in storage and first in is last out!!! Alf pic's to follow

Heh Alf, our pin is directly over the axle, and when I hook up, it depresses the back of the truck (measured in the wheel well over the rear axle) 1 1/8 th inches. Hokie is almost perfectly level when we pull up on a flat pad, and she's hooked up. Which is nice, since I don't have to fiddle with leveling her if we're just doing a one night stand. But, two inches in front of the axle would ride even better it would seem, since it would share the load more with the front axle. You would still have room for the clearing the cab on a severe turn since you have the long bed.

Re: Our 5.0

Hi Alf : Congratulations on the new truck , I saw a picture on another post - it looks great. I've been really happy with the performance of this truck. Our hitch and pin is mounted over the axle as well. As Dan mentioned there is little deflection when hooked up and the trailer is level when on a level pad. The mounting of the hitch over the axle has worked out fine for us and the ride is really smooth most of the time with the exception of some rough roads where you do get some sway.

Re: Our 5.0

Hi: JerryS et al...I felt it prudent to keep the same hitch as I already owned it. The Sierra we had had an extra leaf added when the previous owners were in Chilliwack. That's why I was asking about deflection etc.
We liked the idea of the 4dr. 5 pass. truck. When retired I'm hoping to get away from the 2 vehicle syndrome and this truck will do it all!!! Thanks for all the replys. Alf

Re: Our 5.0

Hi: All...Well the hitch is in the box. Elgin RV had to get a special relay harness that installs in the pass. front kick panel...otherwise the Frontier was all wired for trailering. Cost to switch the hitch was $290. plus txs.
I sold the Delta Tool box as it wouldn't fit in the new scheme. Got $140. after a few hrs. on the Net.
Now I have to pay a visit to "Our Escape Hatch" to let out the pin box as it will be up too high for the new tug. Any body know what position/holes their pin box bolts are in Alf
escape artist N.S. of Lake Erie p.s. I found out our slider (EZRoller) was never adjusted properly when installed in the old truck and wouldn't have worked if needed. YIKES!!! Alf

Re: Our 5.0

Heh Alf,
As you will notice, we got our first snow last night....3"
You will also notice that there is one row of holes left exposed.
The top of the hitch (when flat, or parallel to the ground) in the bed of the truck is about 18 1/2" from the truck bed. Hope that helps

Re: Our 5.0

Hi: HokieEscape...Dan That's exactly what I needed to know and see!!!
It sure is "looking a lot like Christmas". I'd like to say we don't have any snow yet but boy are we getting it!!! I bet we got at least 5cm(2" 's) in the last 24 hrs. Last Thur. Buffalo got 1m(3'). and stranded some motorists for up to 11 hrs.
The grass here is now covered but the pines really look nice... a real Currier& Ives view. Thanks for the pic. Alf
