Maybe I am used to them, as there is one on my truck pretty much full time, but it has been many, many years since I hit one.

I use it as a step to get into the toolshed on my truck.

I'm with Robert. Did it once when I was a kid, dad towed a boat. I think I still have a dent in my shin. Never again.

Don't recall bumping my shins on them, but I have received some very nice grease stains on my pant legs (and on my bare legs ) from brushing up against the ball.

Yes. And in my case I wondered for a day or so where the grease came from. Until I did it again with a fresh pair of jeans.

Another great reason to take the hitch off and stow in the TV every time we unhitch the Escape!

Third time? One would think you would learn after the first, or at least the second time.

That does look like an interesting solution to those inclined to hit them.

I do this when pulling the Escape, most of the time. On my work truck the ball mount stays in place, as I am often hooking up and towing my dump trailer. Plus, like I said earlier, it works as a step a bit further out than the bumper.

I've learned to be careful! I've had two people gently bump into me at stop signs, saved the bumper each time. The last one was a college kid in his mom's nice Volvo...He wasn't going all that fast, but it sure trashed the Volvo's grill and radiator. I lost a little grease off the ball.

If you have the Andersen hitch there is a huge chunk of shiny machined aluminum sticking out that metal thieves love to swipe. I remove it if there is no trailer attached..............

I remove it too, but have always left it sitting under the tongue when camping. I can't believe another camper would steal it. Have people actually reported this piece stolen? There is a couple bucks worth of scrap there, is all.

Jim, I haven't heard of anyone stealing the Andersen, but you know some folks are just flat mean and would steal it because they could. What I'd worry about, is if it disappears (for whatever reason), how would you get home?

My WDH isn't Andersen, but I have a stinger and ball that replaces the WDH when I'm not towing. I keep it in the vehicle when the WDH is employed.
I'm hoping that it keeps somebody who parks by ear from hitting my spare tire, which is mounted on the rear hatch and sticks out further than the "bumper". That's the theory anyway.
