Here is an update on events at the May 6-8 Pink Elephant Rally:
Campfires - Hopefully we'll be able to find one of our attendees who would be willing to host the evening campfire(s) since our site has the fire pit right under some small trees. Remember that firewood must be purchased or gathered locally due to State disease restrictions. There is a gas/convenience store right along the highway in Fayette that sells bundles, as well as a farm which sells bundles across from the entrance to the State Park. Hopefully folks can all pitch in to provide firewood! We'll try to have campfires for sure on Friday and Saturday nights.
Morning Coffee - Coffee and small snacks will be provided at site 26 on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. Please bring your own cups/mugs!
Friday evening Wine/Beer tasting - We have reserved the shelter house at the junction of the roads going to the campground and lake. People can bring a bottle of wine or favorite beers to share from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. We will provide small wine glasses and plastic Solo glasses for beverages. Picnic tables are in the shelter, but you may want to bring chairs, too, if you want to spread around. Munchies are welcomed, too! Park regulations stipulate that alcoholic beverages can't be in open sight, so we'll keep the bottles/cans in some strategically placed coolers. We may also have some quiet background piano music if my old fingers can get back in shape. Remember: background music, no listening or clapping (or booing/jeering). WEATHER: Unless it is very stormy or blowing rain, this should be able to go on under the shelter roof.
Saturday evening Potluck - We have the same shelter house reserved, so we'll plan on a group evening meal from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. We are providing hot dogs, buns, and condiments. Please bring your own dish to pass, drinks, and plates/eating utensils. Chairs to spread out are good, too, so we aren't squeezed on the picnic tables. WEATHER: Stormy or very windy conditions could cause a cancelation. However, hot dogs would still be available at site 26!
Trailer Tours - It will be up to individuals if they would be like to welcome people into their trailers for tours at any time. Nothing is being planned as a group.
The long range forecast seems to indicate cool temps, but keep your fingers all crossed for a warming up period! See you soon.

Pikes peak state
UPDATE:
Finished some staining and sealing on our home and with the fall leaf peeping season in full swing in Eastern Iowa, we decided that when a light rain stopped falling and the skies cleared we needed a little road trip.
With the knowledge that Pikes Peak State Park campground has been undergoing a major renovation I thought a house call was in order.
The conclusion:
Contractors have completed a lot of clearing work, realignment of the campsites and more new concrete paving than I’ve seen in a long time in an Iowa State Park. It certainly had a transformed look. The downside is that considerable
grading still needs to be done and given that declining soil temperatures will make grass seed germination and survival marginal this late in the season, grass establishment between sites isn’t going to happen yet this fall. In my experience the path would be dormant seeding after all possibility of germination passes in mid to late November. Then germination occurs in the early spring as soil temperatures warm.
Here are a few photos of the “progress”. The large dump truck and the track type skid loader are on what I believe will be the host sites.

Thanks for the update. We are discussing moving the date, so that things have settled down at the campground. That way, we get away from Mother's Day weekend and the stores will be open in McGregor. The last time we were there, we were disappointed that few of the cute stores there opened on Memorial Day weekend.
We also discussed moving it, but we don't have a finger on exactly where we would move it to. We have looked at a few places but have not made decisions as to possible other spots.
We had planned a stop in IA to see Pike's Peak for ourselves in a week or two, as we were planning a visit to Mom who just got out of the hospital in Cedar Rapids. She is in the Care Center in Anamosa.

Looking at the second weekend of June, 23rd to 25th. We miss Mother's Day and Father's Day and what other rallies we know of. And the shops of McGregor will be open. What do you think, Iowa Dave? Will Pike's Peak be ready by then?

Yes, the shops will be open
And the bugs will be out & about too, depending on weather conditions. They can be hordes of bad.
Iowa Dave is likely still napping, so I piped in instead.

Pikes Peak CG
Hi Tom and Cindy.
No nap today. Washed a load of clothes, Did some winter stock up shopping. Drove 80 miles round trip to pickup my grandson who is staying with us for the night. Then picked a bushel of apples in the rain. Drove into Cedar Rapids to get 3 trees for planting in the yard. Two oaks and a hickory. Reviewed my stock of bird posters that I’m going to give to a kindergarten teacher. Now assembling my kit for early muzzleloader deer season that opens tomorrow. So a pretty busy day for an old man.
At Pikes Peak, if they get the grading done and seed yet this fall late, there should be decent grass in the CG by mid June.
You never know about mosquitoes, gnats, and chiggers here in Iowa. Rainfall, overwintering, wind and nearby vernal pools all contribute to numbers of insects in the spring. .
Mid June would work for us I believe. Once the date is set I would advise getting a reservation asap. I’m sure the DNR will be heavily promoting the use of a CG that’s been closed for a couple years and has been renovated.
We had excellent weather and a very light bug problem at Sullivan Illinois last June,
No reason we couldn’t have the same at Pikes Peak.
Think of Zebulon Pike rowing up the Mississippi river well before Lewis and Clark and before he went on his second expedition which took him to the more well known Pikes Peak in Colorado. Them boys were tough. And probably pretty stinky.
McGregor, and Marquette Iowa last Wednesday afternoon

Thanks for the great advice! To avoid other rallies in the first part of June, it looks like we will probably settle on June 23-25 at Pikes Peak this year. We will get the date out and more info once we are back in better internet range next week. Not much signal for our phones here at Brown County, Indiana.
