The Old West lives

There’s an organization here called S.A.S.S. They have a ranch that every year sponsors the “World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting.” It’s ten days of competitors and honored guests who arrive by truck and trailer and target shoot against the clock at fourteen carefully designed outdoor shooting bays.

They plink at stationary metal targets using six-shooters, 1911 pistols, rifles and shotguns. Go down a hill and there is an arena where mounted shooters race their ponies around a barrel course knocking off colored balloons with wadded cartridges.

It’s an amazing big deal and even attracts shooters from across the pond. This week was the “36th Annual End of Trail” convention at Founders Ranch. The hillside gets loaded with parked recreational vehicles. They arrive from across the continent to dry camp and compete. Safety glasses and ear plugs are required. Everyone wears their cowboy clothes. Of course I had to get over there to see if any Escapes were in the mix.

Were there any Escapes or fiberglass trailers? I met a
fellow Friday from Wausau Wisconsin who had a nice little Scamp 13 at a Fur Takers of America national in Manchester Iowa. He was very happy with his scamp and knew all about Escapes. Another fellow came by when we were talking and after showing interest in the Scamp we worked him over pretty good for about a half an hour and he left with an Escape business card and both of our cards. The guy with the Scamp was an Axe collector and I dont mean guitars. Said he had around 500.

A lot of big boy slide-outs, a couple 30 foot Airstreams, but not a single Escape. Very disappointing.
