After a few weeks connected to the Big Bend Rio Grande Village water supply our electric water heater element sounded like a cross between a bowl of Rice Krispies and a hillbilly jug band. But it didn't burn out and when I drained the tank last fall about a pound of calcium flakes came out with the water. (The sacrificial anode was toast however.)
I don't think it did any permanent damage to the element but I purchased a spare just in case. That means it will probably never burn out - according to the Laws of the Universe.
