Heck yea! We did a kitchen remodel 10 years ago and had a 36" gas unit in mind. After having dinner with a friend with the same cooktop who said she hated it as it was so difficult to clean I took Susan to a kitchen retailer with a live induction stove. They said chefs prefer it for precise cooking. It also has a timer to turn the burner off. I was sold as I know my wife is a great, yet messy cook and couldn't envision 5 gallon buckets to clean those huge grates. We did have the wall plumbed for gas just in case, yet I don't ever want to go back!

Cast iron won't work on induction though, will it?

Cast iron, enameled cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel for induction (my All Clad is induction useable)...basically any pan/pot bottom that is attracted to a magnet that is flat bottom will work on any induction burner.

Caveat: Some older cast iron model pans have a ridge around the perimeter that raises the bottom of the pan away from the surface of the stove; doesn't work very well.

Additionally, you can purchase an adapter ring to place between a non-induction type pan/pot and the glass top of an induction burner. Not ideal but they do "work".

Even my 1925 cast iron waffle maker: Works better than atop gas!

The other neat salient feature of cooking on an induction stove: There is no flame/heat licking up the outside of the pot/pan which eliminates hot handles when using stock pots (pasta, soups, etc.), but also eliminates super heating the vertical walls of the pot.

But, technology/electronics wise, they are much more complex than certainly a gas range and more costly to repair if/when.

We replaced our home cooktop with induction and would never go back to gas. We have a portable ikea induction cooktop we use out side or inside if we have shore power, we also carry small butane powered cooking tops. The propane stove inside is the last choice.

Indoor air quality is important .

And if you don't want your pan or pot to slide on the induction burner just put a silicone mat between the pan and induction burner. Also, you can put a paper towel on the surface under your pan to eliminate mess. Try that with a gas or electric burner!

Asked Thermador(Bosch) about that- and they said no. Seems there can be a heat transfer back to the element that can damage the unit. So no diffuser for non-steel cookware.

Exactly why I bought my induction cooktop. I haven’t been in one place long enough to figure out what I plan to do with replacing the Suburban stove but I haven’t used it since all the explosion reports started coming in. All I know is that I want it OUT of my trailer and will replace it with something safer. Unfortunately I can’t replace it with the Dickinson in my 17B. If anyone with a 17b has replaced theirs I would love to know which one you chose and how much was involved with getting it to fit in the existing cutout.

The turkey SDS2 cutout is: Cut-out Dimensions 18 ⅜” x 14 ⅛”

The older style Suburban 3 burner(similar to the Atwood Escape used for years) is:
18 15/16" length, 16 1/8" width. The 2 burner won't work.

Curious, what's the dimension that presents the challenge in the 17B?

From a previous post by Rubicon

“ Be careful in the 17. I believe Escape wouldn’t install a Dickinson cooktop in that model because of the increased depth and possible interference with furnace below. Also if the Suburban stove is turned 90 degrees as the stock position that will put the Dickinson high output 11,000 BTU burner at the back pretty close to the wall if you have the control knobs out front which makes the most sense.”

Hi Michele! Window arrived today; and going in Friday. Took 5 weeks as advertised. Not complaining though and given the peak season am grateful it wasn't longer. The people at Lippert/Duncan Sales were great to work with and seems like the Hehr unit is still intact.
