More GPS follies
For a few years now I've owned a Garmin Nuvi 2457 GPS. I've mentioned its ups and downs in other threads on the forum, but recently it developed a new problem: I started getting a "Battery is Low" error that I couldn't make go away, even if I let it charge overnight. Some Internet research led me to find that this error means that the Nuvi's internal battery needs to be replaced, and it is not intended to be user-replaceable; you are supposed to send it in. There are kits available for users to replace the battery, but they cost $27 on Amazon. Nope, I said-- I'm done with this thing.
Last year I bought a Magellan RoadMate 6230 GPS with a dashcam, hoping to kill two birds with one stone. But I soon discovered that there was no way to turn off its microphone. Well that wouldn't do, so into the drawer it went and I went back to the troublesome Garmin. Tonight I retrieved the Magellan to replace the Garmin after all. I found its microphone hole and force-fed it silicone sealer. That seems to have done the trick, but I'll put a piece of electrical tape over the hole as well, just to be sure. Now I can cuss away while driving and no one will be the wiser.

We took our Garmin Nuvi with us on a recent trip back east (Jet Blue) and found it to be totally essential for getting our rental out of JFK driving to our destination on northern Long Island. Ten days later, back in NM, plugged Garmin into the truck and it was DEAD. Totally. A week later I planned to return it to Costco. Got into the truck, plugged it in again, and suddenly it worked! Go figure.

Myron-
I bought my Garmin Nuvi in March 2014 and have used it only intermittently, mainly on trips. It started showing the "Battery is Low" error last month, indicating that the internal battery needs replacing. If yours is that old maybe you have the same problem.
