Podcasts

The recent Sirius thread got me thinking I could use a few more podcasts to listen to while traveling which is my preference. Would appreciate a list of those you really like. Here's mine.

The Roadhouse: Blues, mostly from little known artists.
Planet Money: NPR, The economy explained.
This American Life: Public Radio, short reports on varied topics.

Doesn't one need computer access to listen to podcasts? I also thought that video was a big part of them too, no?

If one likes military history check out the Pritzker Military Library podcasts. They publish via podcast all the visiting authors and the follow up Q&A. It's a great source of book ideas.

The John Batchelor Show -- He does lots of interviews with authors of history, science, and other non-fiction books, and his show is four hours a night, two hours on weekends. Batchelor is based in NYC, at WABC.

The Larry Kudlow Show -- Kudlow has a weekly show and podcast "where economics meets politics". He is a Reagan-era supply-side economist, so his take is probably different than the NPR money show. Kudlow also interviews people; for instance he occasionally has former chairmen of the regional Federal Reserve banks on his show, which helps to understand how the Fed works.

The Freakonomics podcast -- This is another weekly podcast from the two authors of the Freakonomics series of books. It's hit-and-miss; they use NPR-ish production values, which I find annoying, but others probably like. Some of their podcasts are pretty good, though.

And NPR itself has about a billion podcasts. They have so many, I can't sort through the list to find ones that I might want to hear.

You don't need a computer to download and listen to podcasts. You do need a smartphone with a podcast app. Unfortunately I've had a hard time finding a podcast app for Android phones that is easy to use. If anyone has a recommendation, please tell us.

I started the Sirius / XM thread to see if the satellite radio service is a viable alternative to podcasts, but after seeing the responses I guess I won't go for it. It would help if I had a good audio podcast app on my Android phone, though.

I've been downloading them to my laptop at home, save them up and transfer them to the Ipod for use on the road. Haven't looked for an Android app to do them via cell. I have 530 or the Roadhouse 1 hour podcasts saved, more or less, and just pick a random one to start at. I'm sure I've listened to each at least a few times. I do not delete them after playing, they are 1 hour each.

For the rest I just download the same way the ones I've yet to listen to and let them delete after hearing them once. That's why I'm looking for more, these ones are either 20 minutes or 1 hour.

I use my MacBook Air to access iTunes which has a gazillion podcasts. I download to iTunes on the Mac ( some are subscribed to so they automatically download ). Then I connect my iPod ( or iPhone ) and synchronize, which duplicates my iTunes library on my devices.
This can all be done at home and the Mac left there, while the iPod gets to travel.

BTW. I highly recommend "Ideas", a CBC podcast. Wide variety of topics. I found the two part series on "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll fascinating.

I knew I was forgetting something: C-SPAN Audio. It has podcasts of its Q&A and BookTV cable TV shows. There are others as well, but these are really good.

I will try this app out, and look into podcasts. I bet I could certainly get into them.

I used to use BeyondPod. It was pretty complex, I thought, but I had it figured out. Then a few months ago they did an upgrade that made it so different that (to me) it became incomprehensible and I gave up on it. I know BeyondPod is popular, but for some reason I just don't get it. Currently I'm using Double Twist but I don't like it, either. I guess I'm just missing something.

To me, a podcast app ought to be simple: (1) download the podcast, (2) play it, (3) delete it. So I don't understand the complexity of BeyondPod and Double Twist. I get the feeling others don't have this problem.

Yeah, I don't need a manager for podcasts, just a player.

Could I just use Double Twist then? If it's my most commonly used music player.

Can y'all see me just gettin' smarter, and smarter, by the post.

Okay, I went in and there is a whole schwack of pages listed under various categories. Each page has a big list of podcasts. It seems I have to subscribe to each individual page. Is this what I should do? Just being a bit cautious being a podcast newbie.

I imagine a web search would fine a lot more too, eh?

Any podcatcher manages podcast (usually) by having you subscribe to their collection or page. It's just a way to manage the podcasts themselves rather than the RSS feed. Try subscribing to the categories you like. You can always skip through the casts you don't want.

From the ones I do subscribe to on Itunes you just download a single podcast episode, or whatever you want to call it, without subscribing to it? Once subscribed new podcasts download themselves, without user intervention other then launching the app. Are these android apps different?

I have used BeyondPod on my android phone. I paid $6.99 for the unlock key but there a free version with limitations. I listen to several RVing podcasts: the RV navigators, Living the RV Dream, RV Family Travel Atlas and Roadtreking. I love some of the old time radio programs like Gunsmoke (over 500 episodes I think). I'm hooked on The Archers from the BBC radio 4 which is a daily 13 minute soap opera about a fictional English farming community. I also listen to Think with Krys Boyd from KERA, PRI: To the Best of Our Knowledge and the Innovation Hub from PRI.
Happy listening.

How did you transition to the new version of BeyondPod? I found it to be so different from the previous already-hard-to-use version that I couldn't figure it out, and gave up.
