Don't Shoot the Messenger

Since we have gone way off topic... a.k.a. Good Sam thread... I thought it best to focus on this topic directly & start a new thread...

Folks, it's simply naive to believe that duties are determined by the choice of carriers. Duties are imposed as per the nature of the GOODS period. But, after all, we are fortunate to live in democracies so folks are entitled to believe in whatever they want to believe... I've had a Purolator account for 15 years and the same with Livingstone (bought over PBB a number of years ago) as a customs broker. I've shipped a ton of stuff through Sweetgrass, MT/Coutts, AB... import & export, so I know fully well of what I speak.

What I do not accept is to have a vendor send "collect", goods that I have already paid them for. This is like giving them a license to spend my money. They could easily send it insured or on "street" rated carriers that could easily result in all shipping/brokerage charges being higher than the price of the goods.

And no Lyle, I'm not expecting a UPS bill in the mail. For that matter, I've never heard of that happening. In order for you to get your goods from a carrier at your door or at their depot when you owe them money, you have to pay up first. They know that you have already paid the vendor for the goods, so pay up or the goods go back to the vendor They are not going to take the chance that the great unwashed will be honorable and pay them after the fact... To receive invoicing on NET30 terms, one has to have an account with them

So don't shoot the messenger... instead, take responsibility for whom you buy from and ensure that your arrangements are clear... & firm... Good Luck

Finally, for my fellow Escapers that seem enamored with USPS/Canada Post... get used to it... both are not long for this world

Ya'all HAVE A GREAT DAY

Larry

Larry, the thing is, that nobody was talking about the duty fees at all, in fact they do not even exist for anything bought across the border in the US. What the issue is with UPS, and trust me shipping for work stuff as well as personal has given me a lot of educating, it is the ridiculous brokerage fees they apply. For them it has to be routine doing brokerage, and filling out the paperwork might take 1-2 minutes tops, yet they have charged me up to $80 to do this......Absolutely ridiculous.

Like mentioned in the other thread, why can't they just do like USPS/Canada Post does, and charge $10 per transaction, AND include it in the cost rather than ding you hard at the door, where they threaten to just take your merchandise back if you don't pay. It is almost extortion to a certain level.

I am a member on lots of other forums where the feelings are pretty much the same. It is not just the folks here who feel this way.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. They seem to be doing pretty good.

From Wiki:

Purolator Inc. is a Canadian courier that is 91% owned by Canada Post Corporation,[1] 7% owned by Barry Lapointe Holdings Ltd. and 2% by others.

Purolator has partnered with FedEx for deliveries outside of Canada.

Glenn, you misread stargeezers post, he was talking about the postal service, on both sides of the border, being not long for this world. USPS is trying to stay afloat by partnering with FedEx and working on making Sunday deliveries for them...

I didn't misread. Canada Post delivers more parcels than the other couriers ?combined? ( according to their TV ads ) and they own Purolator. It's the mail that is suffering. Parcels are growing.

I agree. Regular letter mail is dying, but the postal services are busy delivering both lower-value stuff (junk mail) and higher-value stuff (parcels, both as mail and as "courier" services). I bought a couple of CDs from Amazon.ca and they arrived in my mailbox... although the delivery was not described by Amazon as coming from the postal service at all.

Canada Post is just now shifting the rest of the country to the group mailboxes (groups of boxes up to a block away from your house) that some of us have had for decades. This is to save cost (letter carrier salaries); the more obvious fix would be to just deliver every second business day (cutting the letter carrier staff in half), but my guess is that they don't want to make parcel delivery less timely.

This is my last post on this subject... The problem with social media today, is folks post a good deal of comment that is simply inaccurate... In my view that is irresponsible. In the old days, all one had was a "Letter to the Editor" and those were usually thoroughly checked. Now, folks just let loose with points that can be very misleading to others... As I began to write this post, I noticed that this thread was addressed 444 times, so a lot of people read these things.

All I'm trying to say is that the blame is being put incorrectly on the carriers (UPS in this case) & I can tell you, that I am no friend with any of them, CP & USPS included. As a vendor, shipping is the cost of doing business and we try to find the best rates for our customers. Do all our competitors do that... no... some for that matter, even mark it up. Gives us a "competitive edge".

Some of you guys may not like this... but here goes a couple challenges:

Jim, your comment above is nonsense... get yourself a copy of Canada Customs Duty Classification Codes and you will see what I mean. For Example, as RV'ers, every time we cross the border (either way) we must declare the goods we are bringing over, and if over the allowable, we pay duty. Don't declare it... get caught... and you will pay a fine & the applicable duty. No different for shipments, except there are no travel exemptions. Then, your statement that it takes just a couple of minutes to fill out all the customs forms, etc. Well that is like saying that to do renovating, it just takes a hammer and a few nails. You don't seem to have any understanding for all of the "red tape" that is imposed on the shipment of goods across the borders and even in some cases, provincial & state lines. Finally, under NAFTA, all goods are duty free, if, and only if, they have been manufactured in either country (Country of Origin).

Next, I think it ws Glen's comment about being inundated with junk mail from Good Sam... wrong... pizza shops, maybe yes... but GS... No. As a matter of fact, at CW in Spokane Valley, we were asked if we would like catalogues, special flyers, etc. mailed out to us. When we replied no because we felt their website served us equally as well, they said okay and we haven't received anything And Glen, I suggest that you don't get your "factual stats" from TV ads, CP parcels no where near out number Purolator, UPS, Fed-Ex, Loomis, CanPar, etc. They were including all their letters, junk mail, etc. Read there Annual Report which is available to all because as a Crown Corporation, they are owned by a single shareholder, the Gov. of Can.

And yes, CP has purchased Purolator some time ago and as Donna D pointed out, in the US, USPS is attempting to work out an arrangement with Fed-Ex. Unlike us socialists in Canada, I don't think Americans would allow their Fed's to buy a major courier But, both postal services are preparing for the "wave of the future".

BTW, our RV cover, sent UPS from California, was delivered by Purolator as do all of the shipments we receive from outside parties that ship to us via UPS. In this area, UPS has this agreement with Purolator. So Lyle, do you think UPS would send us a bill after Purolator delivered it to us? I think not... just another "Urban Legend"

I also have direct experience being "overcharged" by UPS for customs brokerage fees. My experience with receiving goods shipped directly through USPS and CP is that those customs brokerage fees are either non-existent, or significantly less than those charged by UPS. Of course, that is just my personal experience gained on numerous purchases made in the US and shipped to Canada. If you do a google search of this, you will see that the experience has been similar for many many others.

Larry, I can only assume you are somehow spying on all of us, to know what we have experienced. I would suggest you check out this spy equipment, as your accusation that I am lying, is......well, just untrue. I have never paid duty on something bought in the US. Taxes paid, brokerage charged, yes.

Or, maybe you just like slamming other people, I dunno. It kinda feels like you started this thread as a set up to do just so.

I have been charged "brokerage" fee from UPS and will not use them for that reason. I believe the Free trade deal only means items made here in North America are free of duties, so if you buy a item from the Usa that was made is China for example you will be charged duties. The "flat fee Brokerage" the Ups charges is unreasonable and is a joke.

Right... duty and taxes are real (but rarely apply to stuff that most of us get into Canada from the U.S.), but the "brokerage fee" is entirely a charge by the carrier (courier company), not a government charge.

I too have been charged brokerage fees by UPS and for that reason I will not use them anymore.
I was not charged duty, but the brokerage fee was darn near worth more then the item.
