Lights on Unhooked

Just pulled into a campground with my 2014 19. After unhooking from car , including the 7 way connection, all my outside trailer lights have stayed on! Any thoughts? Luckily, I’ve got hookups.

I had a single tail light on not too long ago. Trailer was detached. Turned out to be some moisture had gotten into the 7 pin connector and made a circuit. Why only one light was on is a mystery but cleaning and drying the 7 pin connector terminals cured it.

Get some dielectric grease and smear it in the car side of the 7 way(car not running). Plug in the trailer side so it gets some of the grease in the prongs. That should solve it and prevent it from happening again. It will also protect both ends from corrosion when they are not plugged in. You can put a sandwich bag with a rubber band to hold it on for the trailer end so it protects you from the grease. It is amazing how little leakage it takes to make led lights glow.

I'm all in favor of using dielectric grease but I think that was part of the problem.

Despite the rubber cap on the trailer 7 pin connector some moisture had gotten in. Also, probably because I travel on a lot of dusty roads, it looked like a little contamination of the grease had occurred. Whatever the brew it was conductive enough to make a circuit.

I guess the moral of the story is, keep those terminals clean.

Results of this challenge.
I rehooked the 7 pin plug to my car and the lights went out. (No power to 7 pin plug at the time)
When I got home, I sprayed both 7 pin plugs (male & female) with contact cleaner.
Next time I’m at the trailer, I will follow suggestions per adding dialectic grease.
Thanks for the quick response to my plea!

The way I solved this several years ago:
1. Panic, thinking that the trailer is forever toast
2. Decide that panic doesn’t help
3. Ask the forum what’s happening
4. Get answer
5. Use hair dryer and cotton swabs to thoroughly dry 7 pin connector
6. Small amount of dielectric grease
7. So far so good… about 5 years later
