Airstream/Escape?

I have started looking at RV's. I'm just a few years from clearing house and think I'd like to travel in an RV some.

I like Airstream trailers but they are expensive. I like having the shower separate from the toilet. I don't like that the bed is short. I'm 6'5".

I have never seen a 5.0 in person but I have been looking at it online. What do owners think about the wet bath? Are any of you owners taller than average and if so what are your thoughts?

Why did you go Escape over other brands? I'm looking for a first/last camper that I can use for a hopefully long time. Thanks in advance for your input.

The RV question of the ages. Will my first be my "only". Probably not.

If you can, rent or borrow, one of each of your choices. This helps to make decisions on what your must have options should be.

Airstream's are the iconic choice but have weight and cost concerns. If you are willing to spend a bit check our Oliver as a choice for the fiberglass.

Enjoy the search.

6’ 5” is going to be challenging in most all molded fg trailers. 5.0 Escape, Bigfoot 25 might be the best choices to look at. Im 6’ and just fit comfortably in the 19 bath, the fifth bath is the same size as the 19 and it would be a tight fit for you.
My best friend is about 6’5”, his spouse is 6’3”, and they ruled out molded fg fairly quickly. They even have trouble finding cars/trucks they can fit in comfortably. Ended up going with a 32 ft trailer with slide outs, and they removed the stock queen and built custom twin beds. So far, it has worked well for them for the last four years.
Just make sure you spend plenty of time in each prospective trailer so it can be your first/last.

All three brands of trailers ( Escape, Oliver , Air Stream ) are more than suitable for their intended purpose .
A lot depends on how much of your financial resources you wish to devote to what is for many a weekend or 2 weeks per year hobby.
We chose the path of purchasing a trailer on the more economical end of the scale which left us with more capital for traveling.

We have a 2017 5.0 TA and don't have any problem with the shower or full size queen bed. I am 6'3". Shower is on the small side but doable. We use the campground showers when available. Good luck.

Keep in mind that like a lot of RVs the shower head is on a hose which you can wave over your bent head to wash. It not like you have to shower under a shower head mounted to the wall. Also with the Escape brand you could also sit on the toilet lid and have a shower as the whole area is a shower stall.
To me the concern is if you can make the bed long enough to have a good sleep.
Good luck in your selection.

Just an idea - the bed in the 21' is 7' 2" long and the shower in the 21' is the largest one in the Escape line.

It's the 60x80 bed in the 5.0 that I thought would be nice. Also the roof slopes up in the 5.0. I don't think I could stand up in the 21' trailer.

With an interior height of 6'-4" you would be crouching slightly in a 21. It will be even worse at the overhead A/C if you opted for that as it sticks down a few inches. Constantly crouching slightly and bobbing and weaving around the A/C is not fun which I had to do in my father's old Scamp.

One of our first trailers was a T@da with interior height under 5'8" but between sitting and sleeping and bent over the stove cooking it was not that noticeable. Either one of the larger Escapes maybe workable.

If you get a 17' there won't be space to walk around. Problem solved.

Hey- go gamble at the Chumash Casino near Solvang and enter to win a new Silverado HD and a 27' Airstream. MSRP for both only $170K!

Hi Slim,
We have the classic 21. I have never measured with a tape, but I estimate the true ceiling is more like 6’3”. It is probably the advertised 6’5” before the flooring and insulation. I am 6’4” (6’5” w/shoes) and I cannot stand up straight. I, like you am used to lowering my head anyway, as the vent and air conditioner hang down even further. The only time I stand still is to cook or clean in the galley, and then I spread my legs a little. In the wet bath, I lower my head or sit down. When indoors, I’m usually sitting or lying down. You’ll need to test stand in a 21 or 5.0TA to see if you can manage. For what it is worth, I have no more success standing in an Airstream. They have too much stuff on the ceiling too.

I am only 6'3" but we will be omitting AC in our 21 for headroom, I could stand up with some clearance in the show model. I don't think it will be missed here in the PNW. I may look into a cabinet mount unit if we want to travel to warmer places with hookups.

Got a 5.0TA over an Airstream in 2014.

Being 6'2", I like the full size bed although with the angled front you lose a bit, would suggest finding one to lay in. Bath is fine standing in but I bash my elbows on occasion. Wet bath takes a little getting used to, had a dry bath in a Starcraft and liked it better but that's the trade off for a small trailer. We use the campground showers when we can.

Wasn't thrilled about needing a 3/4T truck for the 28' Airstream, had just bought the 1/2T. The Airstream is heavier then I cared to lug around. Big diff in $ too. 35K vs 85k, at least it was a few years back.

If I were to want to sit in one spot longer then we do now, as in spending a winter in FL or some such, I'd reconsider a bigger trailer like the Airstream, for traveling like we are spending only a week or 2 in a site, the Escape works great.

5.0 TA in Georgia

Slim,
Click on the tab "Owners Map at the top of the page near the word forum.
It shows there to be a pretty new 5.0TA in Newnan Georgia.

It has the owners' names so you can either try to locate them by a search or contact Escape Trailer Industries, and they will probably give you the owners' info.

Most owners love to show off their trailer, and ETI will give them a little a little money if they show it and you buy one.

Others are correct that the 21' has a slightly larger wet bath, but in your case, I'd go for the super high ceiling in the TA. Despite what others have said, I think the bed in the TA is 60x80 and I know it is 54x80 in our 21.

If you're still shopping in March there is a fiberglass rally near Montgomery, Alabama. It will have dozens of potential trailers, including an assortment of Escapes. Do a search for fiberglass + Green Eggs and Ham. If you haven't ever been to one of these, people will not only welcome you to take a look, but will generally hand you something to drink.

Bill

It is always best to contact ETI for an owners contact info, that way there is a record for a possible referral at a later date. In addition not every owner likes to show/display their unit and Escape has a list of owners that do participate in the "show and tell" scenario.

Thanks for all the information. The 28' Airstream was the one I thought I wanted. I also didn't want to buy a 3/4 ton truck. They just cost too much. I'm also a bit put off by the number of posts about airstream people replacing rotten floors after leaks.

The newer (2015 and up airstreams have ducted A/C units so they don't hang down.

I can't see any rot issues on the fiberglass trailers. Am I wrong on this? I plan on storing it inside when not being used.

The Airstream dealer in this video (59 mins) states the roof seams have to be redone ever 5 years...”stripped and re sealed” and there are some long seams running down each side of the roof.
https://youtu.be/mH50mNul-J8
Checking that the vents are sealed on the Escape is way less work.
I think you would be pleased with the roof line of the 5TA inside.
