Smile Aloha From Hawaii

Aloha Kakou,

I have been researching travel trailers for a few years now and I think I'm sold on an Escape. Being in Hawaii, it's very difficult to purchase anything used as they go so fast. So we're on a 4-year plan to purchase a new Escape. I'm leaning toward a 5.0, but not totally sold yet. We'll be visiting Chilliwack in early June to visit the showroom.

Three of our four children have moved to North America (or the mainland as we say in the islands). My wife is from Palmyra NY, (I'm the local boy) so we have regularly visited the mainland during the summer and do road trips with a rental car and tent most of the time. Now that I'm retired, we plan to travel on the mainland from late spring to early fall, visiting friends and family, and winter in Hawaii. Kinda like a reverse snowbird.

I am hoping I can get some insight from our forum members. I am wondering if there is a state that will allow vehicle registration for non-residence. I'm not sure if I can register my tow vehicle (TV) and trailer in Hawaii if they are not physically present in Hawaii (Hawaii registration is expensive anyway so I would rather not). Any insights from this group as to how I can register my trailer and TV would be greatly appreciated.

South Dakota

Why this South Dakota county is a global license plate hub

When it comes to vehicle licensing, South Dakota is special. It’s what is known as an “open registration” state. That means you don’t have to be a state resident to register your vehicle in South Dakota, which offers a lot of potentially money saving benefits.

Unlike many other states, South Dakota doesn’t require a VIN check upon registration or a vehicle emissions test, which means the car never needs to physically be in the state.

The state doesn’t require drivers to have a South Dakota driver’s license to get South Dakota plates.

Thank you so much for the article. I was aware of South Dakota's mail forwarding service, but not aware of the vehicle registration. I appreciate your prompt response. Happy trails to you.
