In decades living in or near places which had no obvious demonym, it hasn't been an issue. People just use terms such as "<name of place> resident". So, someone living in Abbotsford is an "Abbotsford resident", and someone who grew up in Abbotsford is "from Abbotsford". There's no need for a specific term, but it can be amusing to suggest them...

You're right, no need. I hate the term "San Antonian". Sounds like the name of a high school or hospital. But, that's what they use.
