For many (like me), it comes down to a choice between the 19 and 5.0TA, as the 21 is ruled out due to the layout and size of the bed, even though it kinda fits in between the two models.

Others for good reasons, love the 21. I think that, other than the exclusion of the 13 and 15 now, that Escape has a really good variety of trailers to choose from. No one model will be ideal in every way, but the options certainly help to fit the differing styles of everyone looking for a quality moulded fibreglass trailer.

Add on another 2-300 lbs of hitch weight you are now approaching a lot more weight in exchange for space, your choice. Another reason why I went back to a 19 from a 21, if you do not need all that extra space, why bring it. And as Jim B.pointed out, it is nice to have choices, sometimes life does not give you that opportunity.

True story Jim, but if doing a comparison between the 19' and the 5.0TA layout the only thing in common is both have the same size side bath.

The 19' , 21' and 5.0 TA all are great trailers . They all have their individual advantages and non have an issue that is so bad I would rule it out. Cost of the trailer and if my present tow vehicle is capable is a large issue for us. Any of the Escape trailer's would be an improvement over our current trailer and we would be proud to own any model escape.

There are lots of people who have owned two models (and usually pulled both with the same tug for at least a while), but I can't think of anyone who has owned three. Jim (cpaharley2008) has his third model on order, but changed it (to a repeat model) so that blew the prospect of a three-model owner.

You might be surprised. The "drag" feel you mention is greatly influenced by two things: the frontal area of the trailer and the direction of the wind. There's a remarkable difference between towing our 19 downwind instead of upwind - a difference we can feel in the way the rig performs and also feel in our wallet.

A 19 has a pretty good sized frontal area, with the 21 being the only trailer with a larger one. The 5.0TA actually has a slightly smaller effective frontal area because some of it is covered up by being closer to the truck, and it's not as blunt.

Fiberglass trailers like the Escape are also much better at reducing the effective frontal area than many stick built trailers, because they are more rounded and aerodynamic, and because the gelcoat surface is smoother than others.

To put it in practical terms, we have gotten as much as 18 mpg when towing in a decent tailwind, and as low as 12 mpg when towing into a good headwind. You can feel it in the performance too.

All Escapes tow very well with an adequate tow vehicle. Since you'll probably be towing with a full sized truck, get the trailer you like and don't worry about the drag. It'll handle either with ease.

All trailers are "covered up" to some extent by the tug, and the 5.0TA is covered less because it sticks up higher. If you are looking at how much drag there is at a given speed (and calling it "effective frontal area"), that's CdA...
A = area
Cd = coefficient of drag, which depends on shape
CdA = multiply coefficient by area
drag force = a function of Cd, area, fluid properties, and speed (actually speed squared)
The drag on the combination of tug and trailer depends very much on interaction between the tug and trailer. A box-shaped tug (such as a van, SUV, or truck with cap) could work with a conventional trailer about as well as a pickup truck with a fifth-wheel.

So, the 5.0TA has the largest frontal area, followed by the 21', then the 19', then the 17'. The 13' and 15' were the same as the 17' (unless they were a little lower). The 5.0TA might have the least drag per unit of area (that's Cd), and might work with the tug best... it's not less area, but it could be lower drag force.

Fair enough - less drag per unit of area. That's what I meant by "effective" frontal area. Although it doesn't actually reduce the amount of frontal area, the effect of it is lessened.
