Towing vehicle

Need some help here. I have a 2017 Hyunda Santa Fe. V6, 290 HP. Specks on it say towing max. 5000 lbs, tongue weight 500 lbs. max. I have been looking on the web at a 21 ft. Escape fiberglass trailer. We travel pretty light and would never max. out the capacity of the trailer's loading capacity. I'm just concerned if I'm leaving a good safety margin in my vehicle's abilities.

Dennis, see if you can find the GCWR of your Hyunda. Sometimes you bump into that limit but not the max 5000# trailer one.

This is what I found on the vehicle GVWR 5622. Not sure what the difference between GVWR and GCWR Is. the Sant Fe is AWD.

  • GVWR is the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating - how much the vehicle and everything it is carrying (including the trailer's tongue weight) is allowed to weigh.
  • GCWR is the Gross Combined Weight Rating - how much the vehicle, everything it is carrying, and everything it is towing, is allowed to weigh in total.

The reason to check GCWR is that with the maximum allowed weight of trailer included, the gross combined weight with passengers and cargo in the SUV could add up to more than the GCWR. Exceeding the GCWR generally means a risk of overloading the engine and transmission, which have to do the work to move the whole combination.
