Trailer pickup in January

We live in Ontario Canada and our trailer will be ready for pickup in December 9 2022 so we would like to pick it up in January and go south until the weather warms up in Ontario. Any suggestions to go for first time rv travells.

I live in Washington state and I winter in Arizona, Phoenix area and south. If you plan on going south at that time of year there are some passes you need to go over. Watch the weather or you will be towing in snow. I follow the coast all the way down to the LA California area and then cut over. The coast takes longer but it’s a pretty drive and no snow.

We had a January completion date for our trailer but did not pickup till June. We did this partly because of Covid but also because of off gassing of the build materials. Some people don’t mind the smell, but others get headaches. If it’s warm enough to keep the windows open you’ll be fine, but if it’s closed up, the smell can be strong.

Your completion date and plan to pick up in January are both exactly the same as what we did with out 2019 E21. Back in those times, we traveled to the factory with our tow vehicle where Escape installed the E2 hitch hardare. We then drove back to Sumas, WA, met the trailer and driver, hitched up, then drove to our Belligham hotel load up all our stuff for the trailer. We headed out that same afternoon following pickup, and towed to Mount Vernon, WA to spend the first night in the trailer. Getting all the stuff sorted out and stored where we wanted made for a challenging evening!

The next morning, we headed out on I-5 and drove south to Eugene, OR where we spent the night. The following morning (after paying very close attention to the weather forecast and road conditions) we headed out up and over Siskiyou summit on I-5 into northern California. Our ultimate destination for our first longer stop was Indian Waters RV Park in Indio, CA. We then went to Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for two weeks, Yuma AZ for a few weeks then headed to Big Bend National Park in Texas, getting back home to New Mexico on March 15 after a stop in Las Cruces to winterize the trailer.

The unorganized Quartzsite Fiberglass Rally is scheduled for February 7 - 13. Come early, stay late and enjoy!

The link is to information at the Casita Travel Trailer Forum, which you may have to join to read. Here are some photos from past gatherings at Quartzsite.

If all goes well, I'll be in the Quartzsite Long Term Visitor Area starting the second week of December.

I've driven down 5 to Fresno many times in January. You do have to watch the weather. I prefer it to 101 because rain on 101 is sometimes very heavy and there can be mudslides and closures. But you can always opt for that if it looks bad on 1. Next is either Tehachapi or the Grapevine but that's also a wait and watch the weather situation. None of those passes close for the winter. Most of the time with planning I drove (occasionally towed) on dry roads.
