Waiting in line

Jean and I submitted our deposit for a 21C this month. (What have we done?) Delivery seems to be about a year out. We've been lurking in this forum for almost half a year.

We've been life-long tent campers and minimalist (ultralight) backpackers, and I still teach those skills. I've hiked about half of the Pacific Crest Trail, and we've hiked the John Muir Trail together. All of my best camping memories are of places one could not take an RV.

I've never owned an RV but I've rented them--most recently a tiny Airstream.

I used to produce a podcast about Wilderness Recreation; long before most people knew what a podcast was: The WildeBeat

My first experience camping in a trailer, before my parents switched to tent camping, was in my early childhood (pictured below).

I think you’ll love it. We combine the two using our escape as a base camp for day hikes an the occasional backpacking trip.

Hey Steve, your story is similar to ours, except we have already picked up our trailer.

The wait is long, but it gives you time to envision how you’ll use it, plan your configuration, get a tow vehicle, and set aside money.

We’ve been putting our bikes onto the back of our trailer and going for rides in all sorts of new places. I expect next year to use our trailer as a base camp for some backpacking.

You’re in the right place. Welcome!

Yep, travel to places, go hiking, come back after several days in the woods and have your own bed and shower. It’s perfect.

Seems to me you've decided to try a different situation for your 'base camp' on the edge of the "wild" areas you've so long enjoyed!

I'm betting you'll like it, will still enjoy those treks-from-base with the tent, congrats on your order!

I guess we've got 50% of your short list covered (vehicle and financing).

I did fill out the little page that said we'd accept it earlier. It would be great to accept delivery a few months earlier. Though I'm not eager to haul it home for the first time in the snow.

Since you're nearby, I might PM you with some questions, if that's OK.

They offered to let us haul ours home in the winter, yeah, hard pass on that.

You’re welcome to come by sometime and check out the trailer/options we got, or shoot me any questions you have. We are in west San Jose.

Best,
Rick ( & Mary )

I wouldn't want anyone to think that it isn't feasible to pick up in Winter and take the trailer down I-5 to CA. We do it every Winter and have never had any problem.

The trip does require some willingness to be flexible because conditions can change but the road is cleared quickly because life as we know it depends on the enormous flow of goods up and down it. We have never actually had to change our schedule because of conditions. But we're willing to do so if required.

Yeah, I’m sure for people that regularly drive in snow and have towed recently it’s not an issue.

But those of us that never (well, maybe fifteen years ago was the last time) drive in snow…. Well, speaking for myself I was a bit scared to even attempt my first time towing our new trailer with a possibility of snow. Fifteen years ago I almost spun a grand Cherokee on highway 50, I think it was black ice.

Not to belabor the point but I can't remember the last time that I drove in snow.

The trickiest conditions that I've ever driven in going South was one year Portland ploughed the snow but left ridges between the lanes. If you weren't in the correct lane too bad. One campground had snow but it was entirely usable.

I guess my view is that if you're capable of towing a trailer on I-5 you'd probably do just fine going South in the Winter.

I'd hate to think that some folks think that it's not possible and give up several months of their trailer enjoyment. But it's a comfort level situation.

If it was ready in the winter, I might change my order to add delivery. I'd ask to do a video call with the factory on the day before they put it on the truck to ship it nearer to me to check things out.

Has anybody else done this?

Welcome!

Hi Steve! It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife when you viewed our 21C and we are thrilled with your decision to 'wait in line' for one. It's the perfect 'base camp' in our humble opinion. If you choose to have it shipped, we've no idea about a video tour but seems like a reasonable request for your ETI representative. As you know, we are close by so feel free to reach out to us anytime for any further questions. Lot's of amazing help, ideas and support from folks here, too. Welcome aboard! - Bea

We picked up our 21C on Thanksgiving Day last year and in the middle of flood that engulfed Sumas.

Where there’s a will…

Harris did a video tour of our 21NE prior to delivery last September. It was reassuring as he pointed out all the add ons that we ordered. I'm sure if you ask he would accommodate you.

Thanks for the point of information. Unless we get moved-up a lot from our originally-quoted build date, I expect we'll be taking delivery in the summer.

Waiting in a shorter line!

Our spot in the queue made more than a 100-spot jump this month.

My fear posted above in this thread about picking up and driving home in winter conditions may come to pass. Our production might start in late winter.

We head South, usually in Feb. year after year without any problems. As long as you have the time to sit out an unexpected bad weather situation for a day or two a winter trip South isn't an issue. Also, I-5 is the lifeblood of commerce and anything like snow is cleared up very quickly. We've never had any delays.

Once we're on the road we see a surprising number of RVs also heading South.

Steve,
As Ron said, I-5 is the path home, and if a storm hits in the Siskiyou Mts. between Eugene, OR and Reading, CA, just give ODOT and CalTrans a day, and they'll have it clear.
A beautiful lternate route from Eugene to Weed if the weather's OK is OR-58 over Willamette Pass, then US-97 to Klamath Falls and then over Grass Lake Summit, skirting around Mt. Shasta to Weed, and back on I-5. It's the same mileage as I-5, but avoids the I-5 traffic through the mountain twists and turns.

Issue #2: registration in Calif.: you have 20 days max. once you return with your new Escape, to CA. Historically, by far the best place to register it is the DMV at Mt. Shasta City. Exit 738, Lake St. off of I-5.
If you have a check with you, you can walk out with your temp. reg. and a license plate with that one stop. They know what they're doing.

(We didn't know, so we used our local DMV: 3 visits totalling about 8 hours of our time. Ugh.)

One option is to get it built and pay for a couple months' storage. Then go get it when the weather's better.
