If one is concerned about safety and crime while traveling in North America then Canada is the place to visit .
Many of the posts in this thread were obviously not written by someone trying to attract tourism to their state (Donna is the exception ) Perpetuating stereo types may be funny but also may be harmful.

I will admit we avoid several states in the US while traveling due to safety concerns, cost, culture , language barriers, over attentive law enforcement, etc, etc.
Some states want tourism and the dollars they bring , while other states do all they can to discourage it by high taxes , fees, or state parks and attractions that look like they been neglected for 50 years.
Since it our money we get to choose no matter the reasoning behind the decision. For us Oregon is #1 , great State & Local parks and they have a strong concern for the enviroment.

A few links. I know there is a 6% sales tax and we must purchase an RV program decal but have not done it yet - will not be taking possession of our trailer until March. Hopefully, these will be helpful.

You could get a NC plate/tags for your Escape before you leave and then switch them over to Idaho tags next year. This would save you 50% on sales tax (NC 3%) and you would have plate/tags to put on once it's imported.

Just be careful with the timing. The way I read it you need to prove to Idaho that you owned the vehicle for at least 3 months or they are going to want their 6% (or maybe 3% if you prove you paid 3% to NC).

Moving to and from Idaho

"If you're moving to Idaho as a new resident and bringing a personally-owned vehicle that you bought more than three months before your move, you don't have to pay Idaho tax. If you're bringing personally-owned vehicles from a state that doesn't have a general sales tax (e.g. Oregon, Alaska, Montana, New Hampshire, or Delaware), you'll need to complete Form ST-102 and give it to the DMV clerk when you title and register the vehicle.
However, if you're moving to Idaho as a new resident and you bought the vehicle within three months of your move, you have to pay Idaho use tax when you title and register it. Idaho gives a credit for sales or use tax paid to another state."

“8.00 registration fees along w rv fees. Rv fees based on 100% market value. Rv fees are 8.50 for 1st 1000 of market value, plus 5.00 for each additional $1000 of market value”

A nice perk for vehicle registration, one can purchase a $10 state parks pass w discounts on camping as well as free admission.

When I was a tiny lad back in the early 50's my parents were stationed at Mountain home. And just like when they were in Limestone Maine when the season came they picked potatoes for extra money. Since we were to young to do anything we just watched.
In a way you had the government picking them for you.

I met and enjoyed Chubby Carrier and his band a few times. Chubby and I and his base player who was about 450lbs started up and down a rickety set of back stairs in Skips place in Angola. In Idaho, like Wyoming, we build our Interstates thru the potato fields, feed lots, and sagebrush flats to discourage tourists from taking root. The truckers actually call the stretch around Mountain Home "the Big Ugly."

Seriously - here we are 110 miles from Yellowstone, 4 hrs to the Sawtooths, and can see the Tetons from town. The Middle Fork and the Main Salmon River are the longest undammed stretch of river in the United States. We have floated these 190 miles several times thru incredible wilderness.

Yep, just drive on thru Idaho on the Interstate, nothing here! (all this in fun of course)

I totally agree, Bill. As a camping or RV destination, Idaho is hard to beat.

All the northern states that border Canada have a special majesty.
We spent around 10 days in Idaho and they were all well spent.
Someday ,God willing we will again make the journey to Idaho and Oregon.
