Docs for DMV in California - new Escape - in 2017
I have a question for those California people who have recently registered their *new* Escape, in CA.
I was just at the DMV for an unrelated issue... and I asked the seemingly knowledgeable DMV person about what we’ll need to provide when registering our new Escape in California... in 2017.
He said I’ll need to provide a Canadian Title Document, a Bill of Sale, and also a Weight Certificate that *must be done empty, in California* he said.
My questions are:
one) As the Bill of Sale will be in Canadian $.... I’m not keen on paying taxes on the Canadian $ #.
What is the best proof of exchange rate on that day, to USD, so I’m not overpaying on taxes?
two) As one can imagine, there arent many/any certified (?) official (?) places in Los Angeles near us to get the CA Weight Certificate....
Does it really need to be *empty* ?
three) Could I get it done somewhere off the 5 freeway, in California, done as we head south, with it loaded, (but unhitched, I’m guessing) as we head home for the first time with it?
Thanks for any and all advice.
John

Escape paper work also reflects US dollar amount received.

We didn't need a weight certificate. The mfr. plate on the trailer (drivers side, front) has all the info. We took it to one of the DMV's that does trailers (not all do). They inspected it, verified the VIN number, then sent the paperwork to Sacramento. We got a temp. paper sticker, then a license plate in the mail several weeks later.
Others have reported that smaller DMV offices around CA will give you the lic. plate the same day. It seems obvious to me that whatever DMV office you went to is not where you want to get registered/licensed in a reasonable amount of time.
Also, the import document, stamped by US Customs, shows the VIN, shows the price in Canadian dollars, and the equivalent amount in US dollars at that day's exchange rate.
We had ETI give us a bill of sale that included the US funds amount on the days we made payments. It was a little less than what was on the Customs document, and our DMV, and our insurance co. (ACSC), both used that amount.

I registered my new 5.0 TA at the end of March this year. I took the trailer and paperwork to my local, small town DMV. I didn't need anything other than the paperwork provided my ETI. The DMV lady inspected it, and loved it at first sight! I received my license plate the same day. No hassles what so ever except for the large state tax bill I owed!
I know some people stop at a DMV at the California/Oregon border to get registered hassle free.

I had no problem with DMV and provided them with Border doc., Bill of Sale, and Place of Origin paper (which they were most happy with). I made an appointment and received plates that same day - in the Bay Area.

Looks like another case of one DMV office giving completely different requirements than another, within the same state. Why am I not surprised?

According to my online map research - the 1st DMV into CA heading south (on the 5 freeway) is the one at 1848 Fort Jones Rd
Yreka, CA 96097
yet 35 minutes south there is another DMV at 154 Morgan Way
Mt Shasta, CA 96067.
One Yelp comment said that the one in Mt Shasta has much nicer staff, and is a much nicer experience, as compared to the one in Yreka, CA .
Any Escape owners have any experience they’d like to share?

We stopped in Mt. Shasta City at their super small DMV which is in a shopping center. There was plenty of room to park in the lot. We didn't need a weight certificate either. Just the bill of sale, proof of insurance and fill out title paperwork (both owners signatures) pay the fees and away we went. The bill of sale has american dollars, so no conversion necessary. I highly recommend this small DMV.

Hey Jerry
Perhaps it was Mt Shasta? (DMV)
I can't find a "Lake Shasta City" on this list
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/wasapp/foa/cl...To=officeVisit
Thanks.

Oh, Wow. Mt. Shasta City DMV. Put a star on your map.
If we had only known when we brought our 17 home.
We had gotten gas up the street at the Shell station.
That would have saved 3 trips to the Ventura County DMV's
(Of course, I was distracted by a freight train pulling up hill,
otherwise I might have been looking around more )

Several folks have also had very good success at the DMV in Eureka, CA., including us in April, 2016. If you come down I-5 use Mt. Shasta, if you come down the coast on US 101, use Eureka. Make an appt. on-line and you'll be out in less than 60 minutes at either place.

My friend went to Mt. Shasta city earlier this year on his return trip and had no problems. He even got his permanent plate there.
