dog gone

Company offered a bunch of money if I would go away before they do. Third time in two years.

This time, I fell for it. Might be the fact that I don't see an upside to newspapers, or their websites. Could be that I'm 18 months from age 65. In fact, when I went in to HR to get the numbers, it turns out that even though they want all takers gone by Aug. 31, at my age and salary, if I didn't leave by July 28, I'd be working for free for the month of August.

So, my last day is July 27. Actually, I'm on vacation from July 19 so I have to come in for one day and turn in my car and equipment.

Just to fill you in, the company issued an IPO about a year ago or so. $17 a share. Encouraged management to buy in to show support for the company and their own jobs. Most recent trade was $1.17 a share.

I didn't buy in, I'm buying out.

Re: dog gone

I worked for Treasury Dept for 38 years, was working on Enron cases when I decided to call it quits. I had a spreadsheet where I calculated my pension for very month working. when it got down to a $19/month, I said "forgetaboutit" and took a year of sick leave and then retired. That was 5 years ago and I can not remember what working was like. Everyday is a Saturday and now your health is what is important. My goal is to be retired as long as I worked but I doubt I'll make that goal. Recently, due to health I became I'm now my mother's caregiver, she is 93 , thus I'm tied to the house. But eventually I'll be on the road, that is what I dream about. Til then I'll have the best modified Escape 19 this side of the Pecos.
Good luck in your retirement, enjoy everyday, and remember tomorrow is here today.

Re: dog gone

Yup. Bought a couple cans of Cooper's Real Ale malt on sale. I've got all the rest of the stuff to start brewing again.
And, I'll have the time.

Re: dog gone

Hi: gbaglo...Enjoy...I have to stay to the bitter end. No packages!!! Omers pension plan ( Ont. municipal employees retirement) would bridge me to 65...but then the bridge collapses. At that point I`ll get 25% of the max. pension... so I`m working off my sentence (16 mo. less a day) for 10%. Alf

Good stuff. Looking forward to that day myself. It can't come too early for me. My mind is ready now, my savings not quite so much yet.

Re: dog gone

Speaking of savings, when I retired, I stopped saving for tomorrow as I felt tomorrow had arrived. I try to spend my monthly retirement every month and if I start to accumulate some extra change, I give it to charity or my daughter. Hopefully you will be able to do the same.

Re: dog gone

baglo:

Congratulations!

I retired three years ago and have found the freedom rewarding. You do need to plan what to do with your time. One of our best choices was in buying our Escape trailer so that we could enjoy the wonderful outdoors in Canada and the US. It has given the opportunity for my wife and me to develop our hobbies (photography and quilting respectively) and to spend some time with our grandchildren. Be thankful for the health and time that you have! Time seems to go much more quickly when you "pull the plug". Work seems to have been a long time ago.

Best wishes!

Re: dog gone

Congrats Glen. Hopefully you & your better half will now have the time & opportunity to put some real miles on your trailer. Do I hear Nova Scotia calling? Or maybe it was the chorus of numerous states in the lower 48 that are located outside the Pacific Northwest? Happy adventures in retirement & on the road...

Congratulations Glen! Enjoy your new path.

We're awaiting details of the early retirement package my company is planning to offer.

Re: dog gone

Congratulations Glen.

It's not "How much do I need to retire?", it's "How little do I need?". I pulled the plug almost three years ago, and although I miss some aspects of working, I don't miss them enough to ever want to go back...

Cheers,
Fraser

Re: dog gone

Te trouble with retirering is you loose so much.

I lost all my weekends, statatory holidays, and my need for an alarm.

But I did gain more time with my wife.

I suppose I broke even after all.

Re: dog gone

Math makes my head hurt too.

For insurance, I have this house. Could sell, buy a condo and pocket half. Still, I wake up in the middle of the night with "what if this happens" scenarios.

At the moment, I'm just trying to get all my dental done and get new glasses. I've got some vacation booked so only 12 shifts before July 27 departure.

I get the newspaper delivered for half price for one year upon retirement. BONUS!!
