ICBC and RV Insurance

Hello,

Orientation date is coming up fast and we went in to register and insure our trailer today. Unfortunately we left with more questions than answers. The Autoplan that we went to didn't have the most experienced staff on hand to assist us.

What we learned today is that the ICBC portion of the insurance will cover the outside of the trailer not the contents such as cabinets, fridge, stove etc.. The ICBC insurance will also cover while parked in our driveway, on the road and while using for vacation. For contents we will need RV type Insurance. Does this sound accurate?
For pricing we had a quote of $650 for RV insurance and $450 for ICBC for the year. Does this sound about right? It just seems odd that both types of insurance need to know the entire value for trailer and not just the portion which they cover. For example (knock on wood) if a tree fell on the trailer in our drive way will we be dealing with two insurance companies - one for exterior and one for interior? Very confusing. We asked this question and this stumped two of the agents that were assisting us.

Another odd thing that we noticed is when we did the paper work for registering the trailer it is listed was a utility trailer on the ICBC paper work. Pretty nice utility trailer!
We had the agent double check and apparently this is correct according to ICBC. is this correct.

It's our first time registering and insuring a travel trailer so if anyone has a moment to share any tips or advice it would be appreciated.

Thank you.
Scott

Your trailer is an utility trailer according to ICBC.
I pay ICBC less than $100 for the trailer license and basic liability insurance.
I pay Aviva $262 for full replacement. See attached.

Your insurance will vary depending on the trailer, where you live, where the trailer lives, your credit rating and other factors I know nothing about.

Our basic trailer insurance with ICBC and additional full replacement coverage with Aviva is in line with that of Baglo’s. So shop around.

Hello Baglo.
Wow, I finally found out about the kind of cover I need. Two years ago when I got our new 2017 I asked the ICBC agent for full coverage and he said:No we don't do that.My insurance is up for renewal end of November so I will contact Aviva.Thank you Glen.

BTW, I do my renewals by phone and snail mail.

I tried a couple agents in North Vancouver, but they didn't carry Aviva, so I found it easiest to just phone HUB International Barton with my credit card number and they email a copy of the insurance and send hard copy by snail mail.
I initially got my insurance the day I picked up my trailer.

When we were originally registering our trailer two years ago, we asked around about insurance for our trailer as we knew that ICBC wouldn't provide adequate coverage. We knew that Glenn Baglo lived very close to us and reached out to him and he recommended HUB Insurance brokers and the Aviva Insurance product. Thanks to GB, we saved a considerable amount on our insurance. Our pricing was similar.

Thank you for the responses. Looks like by going with the minimum required insurance from ICBC you can minimize the overlapping coverage and save money by doing so. As long as the private insurance company covers collision, comprehensive, etc. Also does the private policy cover trailer while on the road and camping or just when stored at home?

Thanks again.

Our insurance is similar to gbaglo’s. The Aviva portion covers replacement value. In September, after driving to Osoyoos, we noticed that the back window of our 2013 5.0 Classic was completely shattered....no idea how that could have happened. The next morning I phoned ETI and Dave determined that they had the window in stock and made an appointment for the following day. I then phoned Aviva, explained the situation and why I wanted the window replaced by ETI. We drove to Chilliwack, stayed at Cultus Lake, and had our window replaced the following morning....took about 1 1/2 hours. We caught the ferry back to Vancouver Island that same day.
So, damage on Tuesday, window replaced on Thursday. No paperwork to complete, I just answered all the Aviva questions on the phone and sent pictures of the shattered window.
Aviva reduced the deductible from $250 to $200 because we hadn’t made any claims in the 4 years we have had the trailer. I received the Aviva cheque last week.....our portion is $167.

Excellent service from both ETI and Aviva.

I called them today and they want $800 to cover a 2017 21 foot trailer. They said that anyone that has had insurance with them would have been grandfathered in and would pay less. They also said that you can only get replacement insurance for the first 10years. Has any one else been given a quote?

To drive our 2018 on the road from April to October, the province of BC via ICBC charges us $90 for the plates and 2,000,000 liability.

To insure the trailer for loss and damage for the whole year, we went to another broker and paid $268. This also covers a bunch of stuff like bikes, generator, lock repair and frozen foods etc.
It is said to have replacement cost and this can be done for the first 10 years.
In the upper right corner you can see it is provided by International Insurance Company of Hannover SE.

It is an 8 page doc that makes for a good read.

When we insured our new 21 in August of last year, we got the basic ICBC trailer insurance ($150) and additional coverage from Echelon for $308, including new trailer replacement in the event of a total loss.

The numbers do seem to be a bit all over the place. Mind you, everyone's declared values, deductible amounts and liability amount are likely different.

For my 2014 19' with a declared value of $24,000 I pay;

$31 basic charge
$31 for $3,000,000 third party liability
$109 with $300 deductible collision
$95 with $300 deductible comprehensive ($200 deductible for glass damage)

Totals $296 plus $26 license fee.

Just to add to this, we were just quoted 345 for "Supreme" coverage via Sussex in Mission.
