The way i understand it you pay sale tax in the state you register the trailer in. but do you pay on the Canadian value or the us value. I believe the paperwork would be in Canadian dollars

I had ETI make note of the USD value on the bill of sale, MA went by that. In reality, they were going to take the total as USD whether it was in USD or CAD, so it was to my advantage to make sure it was in USD's.

Typically, the state will figure the exchange rate and tax you accordingly. Ask Escape to provide you with the amount you pay in U.S. That way, if the exchange rate changes not to your benefit you can prove exactly what you paid.

NewYorkHillBilly:
We were very fortunate, the UT DMV accepted the current exchange rate the day we licensed the trailer for computing the sales tax amount. Thus, we got a better exchange rate when paying the sales tax than we had gotten in paying for the trailer. Good luck with New York!

When I registered my 17B in NY, they accepted the Canadian price, which, at the time was good because it was about the only time in history when the Canadian dollar was worth more than the US.

By the way, my grandparents lived in Naples, a quiet town except during the Grape Festival. Loved hiking the glens...

Yes, that's me. I haven't been checking my mail messages; currently at Gros Ventre in the Tetons, and will be hanging out in the West until April. Of course things can change, but after having to shovel my roof last February, I'd like to skip winter!

If I get back earlier, I'll let you know...

Aren't we lucky , but the Title, Registration and License fees keep going up with ZERO chance of getting a "permanent plate" no matter how old our Escape may be (like years from now).

I'm paying a lot more now to license my 1988 Scamp every two years than I paid when I purchased it in 2002

Doesn't matter, I'm out having fun and making memories where non-trailer owners sit at home

Where we live, with state and local sales taxes we are now paying 9.225% with the latest increase and the full amount on groceries. To comment any further on this thread would cause an unhealthy spike in my blood pressure. Loren

The Virginia DMV wanted to charge me on the $29,500 CDN base price and I wanted them to charge me on the 23,600 USD that was the rate when I signed the contract. We compromised on the $25000 USD I had sent in since Tammy had included the equivalent CDN $31,250 in the bill of sale.

Ohio charged based on USD, which was on the bill of sales.

Just remember that delivery charges is not subject to sales taxes in most states, so another reduction is had with those who have their units delivered.
