Trailer Security

Just checking to see what everyone does when they leave their
trailer at a campground and go off for a while or the day.
I checked with some people that work at a RV dealership and this is what they recommended.
Sure seems like a good heavy duty coupler lock, hope it never gets tested.....

I have never used one on a travel trailer before. I do use them on my construction trailers, along with a heavy metal cable through the rims. This one does look way tougher then what we use, which is the type that just pinches in place.

The cable is a good idea, I have a heavy cable that I
used for the snowmobile with a lock. Can't be to careful these days.
The insurance company I have talked to said it has to be locked to be covered.

I've done nothing. But, I've only camped in BC and Alberta. Probably need to address security if I venture further afield.

We generally lock the door, put the BBQ and tank on the far side of the picnic table and that's about it. Camp chairs, pots and pans, rusty Coleman stove and Coleman lamp stayed put on the picnic table or nearby. When I had a cooler, it was in the shade of the trailer. I always felt kinda stupid locking the door to the tent trailer when all you had to do was undo six inches of Velcro and reach in to unlock it ( which is what I had to do, since I didn't have a key ).

In twenty years of camping, nothing ever went missing.

Which brings me to another story. A neighbor and friend of ours never locks the house. They came home one evening to find a DVD player on the entertainment centre. They didn't own a DVD player.

I've never talked to our insurance company about locks for our trailer, but the one we have gets used lots, but has not gone anywhere but back home for maintenance in 7 years.

I am one of those that hardly ever locks the doors to our house either (address withheld

) when out during the day. Nobody ever came in and left me a DVD player though.

Hi: All... I was told many many years ago that "just because you don't lock your doors doesn't give someone the right to go in there" then again who wants to tempt fate...and have to deal with the INSURANCE CO.
Locks are for the "Honest People". We use a Husky pin lock and both door locks.

Heh Alf, what is a "husky pin lock"? Is that for the 5th wheel pin?

Hi: HokieEscape...Yepper it's called a HUSKY 5th.Wheel King Pin Lock. It's a "U" shaped piece of steel that wraps around the pin...then another pin goes thru it with a lock that snaps on the end. You can't hook up with it clamped on the trailer

We bought the little hitch lock from Reace , same idea as what we had for our Boler. You can't hook the trailer up to a ball with the lock on. Also we will use it when hooked up on the ball because then it can't accidently come loose when travelling. It is called a "coupler lock", by Husky Towing Products.

This morning we also bought a 5/8 locking hitch pin to keep the whole hitch process locked to our vehicle... Got it at Princess Auto...
I don't know if I am suspicious but I could picture someone with a lot of brawn unhooking the trailer from the car and taking it away...... Maybe not as easy with the larger trailer..but , better safe than sorry....
