USAA Roadside Assistance

All of our vehicles are insured by USAA. Just got off the phone with a representative and their roadside assistance program for us, is an additional $13.26 a year, per vehicle. So that's $39.78 for two vehicles and the trailer, versus $172.00 for our AAA Mountain West Premium plan.

Both the tow and trailer are covered, and the breakdown, towing plans are essentially the same. Scott

That's a good price. I was quoted $2.00/month for each vehicle through State Farm (we have three, including the trailer). We currently have Good Sam roadside assistance and, since I paid for three years, I'll keep them; however, haven't been hearing good things about the state of the company so I'm thinking of our State Farm as backup.

Do they provide 2 tow trucks if your tow breaks down and needs towing?

Some of the flat decks have a 5th wheel on a hydraulic extendible receiver in the back.

HA!! Good question!! Actually, we have friends that have Good Sam and, when they broke down with their GMC truck and HUGE 5th wheel, Good Sam did send out two trucks. One to tow the truck off for repairs and another to tow their 5th wheel back home (they were within 50 miles of home).

Yes they will. Both the tow and trailer have to be insured and covered by USAA. I specifically asked that question and was assured that both vehicles would be towed to the closest repair center of my choice.

It's more complicated if you are a homeowner though and what state you reside in. Everyone probably knows with all those stupid TV commercials that bundling does save on total insurance premiums.

I had USAA for 21 years and then in 1994 got our first RV.
When comparing prices, switching to AAA in 1993 had the motorhome be no charge vs. $700 more total with USAA. I still compare yet it has never come close.

Insurance is a weird and wonderful thing and varies greatly across the country due to claims experience.

I've noticed the distance that the companies will pay for a tow varies.

My BCAA RV PLUS will tow vehicle and trailer 160 kilometres ( 100 miles ). If I pay extra for PREMIER membership, they tow 320 kilometres ( 200 ).

I have the Good Sam and they sent two trucks when I broke down. I was within spitting distance of home and at the time had a scamp 5th wheel. They brought a skid stear with a forks and a plate w the right size ball and brought the trailer home with that...even parked it where it goes by the garage. They are kind of pricey but that one call paid for a number of years of dues.

Thanks for the video. After looking at the different options, I reached the same conclusion. Flying down to Bellingham in three weeks to bring the trailer back home. This will be Aurora Borealis’s 5th trip, and the old Dodge’s 9th, on the Cassiar, Alaska Highway. So far we have been fortunate and have never had to use the AAA. Scott

Didn’t have to use USAA, but AAA comes through

Just got back home Saturday, quick trip up the Cassiar. Four days from Glacier, Washington to Alaska.

Saw four Escapes, two 17’s a 19 and 21. Seven black bears, two grizzlies, three moose and one wolf. Oh, and two stranded ladies in broken down minivan just north of Boya Lake. Gave them a ride to Watson Lake where they used their AAA to get a tow. Scott

I was towing a 3 horse slant load gooseneck with a tack room in front when the injector pump went out on my Cummins. Called USAA from the middle of nowhere northwestern Nebraska and 30 minutes later a tow truck showed up. Single truck pulled both.

I watched those folks a lot also. It was watching their show that made me start thinking that maybe I didn't want a used Airstream after all.
