Hi Glenn
I remember as a junior high school student that we had to memorize a “serious” poem in an English class.
That was the first time I heard In Flanders Fields. A girl I knew pretty well who had always excelled in school recited the poem and did an excellent job. I asked my mom if she knew the poem that night or shortly after I’d heard it. She was able to recite most of the poem she had learned in the 30’s. As my Dad had landed in Normandy and fought through France, Belgium and Germany all the way to “Cologne” Veterans Day and Memorial Day were significant days in our family but the war was not the topic. The topic of the day were the veterans of first and second World Wars who had suffered greatly and sacrificed for all of us. There were 9 houses in our block. Two were “duplexes” and of those11 “head of household occupants” 9 were veterans. 17 kids. The Baby Boom was on.
