Happened to me once too ! A little bit of a shock at first . Hope to never forget to release pressure first .Pat

I don’t understand this, nor does it match my experience. Jon, if opening a hot water faucet at the sink won’t relieve pressure in the HW heater, then how would hot water ever be able to flow to said faucet? Also, I believe the check valve is on the cold inlet, not the hot outlet.
Yep, just checked ours and it’s on the cold inlet, preventing expansion of hot water from affecting cold line side, but this does nothing to inhibit the hot/out flow to sinks and showers.

All I know (from experience) is opening the hot water faucet does not relieve the tank pressure in my 2017 21. I looked, and you are correct - the back flow preventer is on the cold water inlet. No idea of why opening the hot water valve at the sink didn't relieve the tank pressure. Doesn't make sense...

Had you already turned the water heater by pass valve?

Probably need to relieve pressure on both sides, hot and cold. Just a guess.

Nope. And "Nope" is too short a reply...

I took the same shower myself but the water was cold. That’s one way to teach an old dog new tricks.

When I bought the new anode rod, the RV store sold me a device to spray water into the hot water heater tank to clean off particles. Is this a good idea or necessary?

I do it and a lot of crud comes out. Easy to do while anode rod is out.

Don't know why you would need a new anode this soon. I believe you have the same soft water as we do up here. I didn't have to replace mine for many years. The one in picture ( top ) has lots of life left and was eight years old.
In the image below, the bottom one is ready to be replaced.

I used to rinse my tank with the rinser as part of my winterization.

It is a good idea to clean the tank out once in a while but those RV water heater wands are a bit of a gimmick to me. Certainly use it if you already have it and it might be necessary on other brands but the standard Suburban SW6D(E) used by Escape lends itself to a well positioned stream of water shot inside the anode opening from a garden hose nozzle set to "jet". I've done it and a copious amount of particulate has come out.

The wand was not expensive, but I agree, probably using a hose with sprayer would be just as good. And just another gizmo to store! thanks.

The smaller size works pretty good though . Can turn it a little better . We have one and I use it . Pat

You are lucky Glenn . I have to change ours almost every year because of our hard water . Pat

Definitely depends on the water. I usually get a long service life. But this year I was surprised how mine looked like swiss cheese when I pulled it out. This year our travelling was in a different area than usual, the Cariboo area and I guess the water sources were harder.
