CATL Unveils First Generation of Sodium-Ion Batteries

CATL is one of the largest manufacturers of raw cells used as a component in batteries. Battery manufacturers combine such cells to build their 12V batteries.

CATL just announced some new technology that will reach the market in 2023.

Key features include, cells can discharge 90% of their capacity at -20C (-4 degrees Fahrenheit). Current LiFePO4 cells exhibit permanent damage if discharged at 0C (32 deg F).

There is discussion of this on Hacker News.

Skeptical= without judgement

I worked in the consumer alkaline battery industry for near on 30 years. I'd get in the mail a battery industry "rag mag" with a feature article of the month of the newest, best ever, stupendous battery chemistry. Every month. Many are written about, few are commercially or technically successful.

Batteries suffer under the tyranny of physics and chemistry.....reaction rates, toxicity, stability, life cycle, capacity, etc., ad infinitum. We do improve and tweak things with them, and maybe some new combination will click......but physics......and the chemistry are road blocks, just like the speed of light is a roadblock to intergalactic travel. Yeah, beam me up, Scotty, and away....far, far away.
And where's that cold fusion, a 60 Minutes TV clip, just around the corner? And where's my jetpack? Hell, where's my flying car keys?
