Draining the H2O HTR and a COmplicated Thread

We don;t typically winterize here as it rarely gets cold enough long enough to need it. But we had a (rare) week long hard freeze here in the 20's at night.

I drained the water out of the H2O HTR by removing the anode. It wasn't leaking when I removed it but it was not particularly tight. The way I park the trailer close to the fence on the side of the house, I couldn't get it back in properly. It would only go in a couple of turns and then stop.

Yesterday I dragged the trailer out and had a look. The threads were calcified. I took a wire brush on my dremel and gently removed most of the deposts.

A little pipe thread compound and it went back in, nearly all the way. I refilled the water heater and there are no leaks.

While I was at it, I added some water to the tank since we are taking her out for NY Eve. No leaks in the traps, or anywhere else that I could find, so I guess we survived the freeze intact.

When putting the anode back in I always wrap some Teflon tape over the threads. Makes it much easier to remove the next time.

Whether you use thread compound or thread tape, tapered pipe thread joints always need something as a lubricant and sealant... not just to make them easier to disassemble.
