Honda EU2200i vs. Honda EU2200i Companion

I tired to post this yesterday but think I missed a step, so I apologize if this is duplicative.

I was about to purchase the Honda EU2200i when I saw a reference for the Honda EU2200i Companion. Has anyone tried this or do you know if the 30A plug on the "Companion" model is worth the extra $$?

My plans for the unit are to charge the batteries on our Escape when there is too much shade for the solar panel to do the job. We also want to run the AC, so I am assuming a "softstart" accessory would be beneficial? We have the standard Dometic AC (model 640310), and I think it runs around 1700W, and I think the start surge is around 2100 to 2200, so the Honda would be marginal for the AC without the softstart?

I've looked at other models, but the accessories for the Honda and numerous service centers, and reputation for reliability seem to be worth the extra $$ over some of the other inverters out there.

Please note that the "Companion", as the name suggests, is designed for use in conjunction with another EU2200i (two generators 'paired' together) and that's required to gain the benefit of the Companion's 30A output / outlet. With a Companion model you aren't paying for (or getting) 30A output, you're paying for the simplicity of its pairing capability.

Unless you plan from the get-go to buy and run a pair of generators to gain that higher-output benefit IMO you should start with purchase of the slightly lower-price 'standard' EU2200i. You can always grow your system to higher-amp output by adding the "Companion" later if you want.

In either case, you'll need an adaptor between the generator (or generator pair) and your Escape 30A shore power cord, even the 30A outlet on the Companion does not match.

Just for your consideration, Have Fun!

Thanks

Thank you Alan, that is a great explanation and completely answers my question (I've got the softstart question answered by reading some other posts).

I'll go with the standard as I do not have any plans for more than one.

You will probably need a neutral ground plug as well. Mine didn’t kick over the AC until I got it.

I am also getting ready to buy a generator to charge batteries maybe Ac once in awhile.
This past weekend I camped with two other folks who had 24 and 30 ft R s . One had a Honda be 2000i the other a Predator 3500.

The Predator of coarse out did the Honda. But what got my attention was that the Predator was more quiet than the Honda.

So that got me looking at reviews for the Predator 2000. Ya know I think I am going to save 3-400 dollars and get a predator 2000.

Check them out.
