Hot Water Heater Anode Question...

Hello all,

Can anyone comment on how long the HWH anode usually lasts?

Mine is 1 1/2 years old and looking pretty swiss cheesey

I have never used the HWH (we just buy showers at the campgrounds). I'm thinking of putting a bypass in.

Also, a coworker with an airstream says I should get a plastic HWH plug but I was dubious. Anyone have any experience with those?

Thanks,

Glenn

You already have a bypass installed in your Escape by the factory, located under the bed, 2 plastic valves located behind the water heater, if you close them then you will by pass your water heater. If you by pass then you will not need to worry about the anode rod. The anode rod is sacrificial in that it corrodes in lieu of your water tank. If no water, no rust. You can't use the plastic plug with the anode rod, if not in use, you can use the plastic. The rods can lasts for years, depends on your water.

Yep, just bypass like Jim said with the factory installed valves. The anode needs to be pretty much down to the rod in the middle before it needs to be replaced. Mine has been used for 4 years and has at least another one left.

I would not use a plastic plug and lose the corrosion protection, whether I used it or not.

We very rarely use our shower too, but the hot water is nice to have for body and dish washing though, and usually turn ours on in the morning for an hour or so, and then again at suppertime.

Great! I'll switch it off now while the system is empty for winter.

Good to see another Escape 19 from PA. They were scarce in the East when I was considering buying mine.

Thanks,

Glenn

Where are you in relation to York, Pa? Are you on the map, yet?

I am in Southwestern PA, due west of you.

I don't appear to be on the map. Do I have to do anything or does it just happen soon after joining?

BTW, does PA require inspections on the Escape 19? I was told no because it is under a weight limit but found it hard to believe.

Glenn, click on the link at the bottom of the map to go right to the Google Maps page. There are instructions there on how to place your marker.

Hi: 182king... Just finished cleaning the anode rod and flushing the water heater yesterday. The rod isn't far off 0% so I put some new teflon tape on it and will put it back in today. Thanks for the insight. I didn't think it was to bad!!! Alf

Does the hotwater heater come from the factory with a by-pass for winterizing? Or does this need to be an owner mod?

factory by pass is installed by Escape, but you may want to ask reace to install the E-Z winterizing valve that lets your pump suck in your antifreeze conveniently.

I bought a winterizing valve and found it wouldn't fit in the space I had -- it was intended to screw directly onto the pump, but the pump was situated with the input right close to the wheel well -- no space to insert the T fitting.

If you're adding the winterizing valve yourself, make sure you've got room for whatever you purchase.

Doug, you may have to move the pump anyway if it doesn't have flexible hoses which eliminate a lot of noise while in operation. Several member with 19's have already moved and installed the flexible hoses and some even went with the reserve mini tank accumulator that cuts on/off by almost 50%. I guess what I'm saying, once you get started there are a lot of options available.
Here is one thread http://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f8...pump-1592.html
