How to install check valve at water heater inlet

Our 2015 19 didn't come with a check valve at the water heater inlet so I decided I'd try to install one since we've had the usual problems (sticking valve in pump and water leaks at toilet connection). I could only find a check valve with male threads on both ends, but it seems too long to just insert at heater without adding a bunch of elbow or something. I know others have made this modification so I'm looking for suggestions on how to plumb in the valve. Any help will be greatly appreciated!
