Leaky sink

I built houses for 23 years so I should be able to figure this out.
I'm still gazing at it.

My 2 year old (Escape 21) kitchen sink leaks around the base, where the faucet assembly meets the Formica counter. It's not obvious how to take it apart. Access from below is not really happening.

There is a set screw on the handle. I guess I'll start there.

Step two:



Hmmm. Special tool? There is a Delrin compression ring here but it won't be easy to manipulate.

In the pnoto above you can see two flat faces on an inner threaded brass ring. I used a big crescent wrench to tighten that brass ring slightly. That made the leak substantially worse.
