loud water pipe knocking in bathroom of 21
my e21 recently started making rather loud pipe 'knocking' sounds from the bathroom sink under certain water flow conditions when under DC pump pressure.
is that just air in the pipes? at one point today, the bathroom water pipe made a really loud KNOCKKNOCKKNOCKKNOCK like it was vibrating and banging into something. its never done that before.

Air in plumbing will result in what is known as "water hammer" and normally a small reserve air tank is installed to absorb the shock. In addition this residual tank will allow you to use water without the pump always activating. But first check you pump pressure.

My trailer does that until all the air is purged from the lines. If it’s the hot line it’s air coming from the water heater. Just let it run for awhile and it should quit.

Wouldn't a water pressure regulator help with this and be an easier install?

I don't want to belabor the topic but back in the day when I was a new firefighter-medic, we did company fire inspections and we were always instructed to look for thrust blocks (or lack thereof) on the fire sprinkler system because the water pressure caused water hammer when the water flow changed suddenly. Maybe we are talking about two separate topics, water hammer vs. air hammer. Either way, it is a fluid hammer which I suspect is very similar.
In the This Old House video above it would have been interesting if the plumber reversed the installation order and tested the system after securing the pipe and before installing the mini pressure tank device.

Would an accumulator eliminate this kind of issue?
