New battery technology

interesting;

Of course, being from IBM it will probably be even more expensive than Lithium.
And I'm sure that they will initially be soaked up by the automobile industry.

The blog entry describes a cobalt and nickel-free cathode material; the common LFP (LiFeMnO4) type is also free of cobalt and nickel.

I think adoption by the automotive industry is the best possible thing to happen to a technology, since it massively increases production volume and brings down prices. Used electric vehicle battery packs are somewhat popular for energy storage in off-grid and demand-smoothing applications (and even some RVs), because they're affordable compared to anything new.

Maybe so, maybe not.

I worked in the consumer battery industry for decades, and there was always a constant flow of golly-gee press releases and articles on the next new battery chemistry. IBM is certainly a reputable and established company, but lab demonstrations and blog posts are light years away from everyday use. I am skeptical, which means I withhold judgement.
Someday, somebody will come up with something much better, but batteries are chemistry, physics, and materials science and it's tough to deal with and around those constraints.

A couple paragraphs in, the writer says that IBM isn't revealing any information. At that point, I decided, I'll wait for it.
