Placement of Battery Monitor Shunt in 19

Hi all,

This is my first post, but I’ve learned a ton of here as I prepared for my Escape 19 to arrive.

I’m getting ready to install a Victron BMV-712 Smart battery monitor and I’m wondering if someone could share where they placed their shunt? There doesn’t seem to be an easy location to mount it in the front storage box with the batter, so I’m thinking I’m going to need to build a little something to mount it to in there. Thoughts?

(I tried searching, but couldn’t find anything specifically for the 19).

is there room near the negative terminal inside the case? mount it on the side or top of the battery with double stick tape.

Sorry, should have clarified, I have a single lithium battery. So there’s no battery case, just the battery itself and the plywood stabilizer sheet with brackets that they put on top. Can I mount it to the side of the battery itself? Or should I mount it to the sheet of plywood that helps hold the battery in place? I guess I could mount it to the top of that?

so this battery just hangs out outside naked ? or is this under a dinette bench or something ?

Hi Josh,
My E19 has two 6v batteries on a plywood platform in the storage box. There was just enough room on the platform to scab on another, slightly larger scrap of wood that holds my shunt. Installed it on the passenger side, nearest the negative terminal side of the batteries. No pic (sorry)

I ended up finding a spot to mount it along the wooden brace/bracket at the bottom of the battery. I still need to build a little wooden shield to protect it from items bouncing around in the storage box.

I would do something like take a battery box without its lid, and invert it over the battery+shunt, and rig some kind of bungi cord tie down for the lid so it stays put.

In the August Q&A, at 5:30 Min., it sounds like Escape is going to include a Victorina BMV-712 smart shunt in every trailer with at least one solar panel. It is not super clear in the video, but that is what I understood.

Josh, please see the attached photos. Sealed box for the Victron shunt, held in place with epoxy, attached to the wood cover that covers the lithium batteries. Strong, dry, protective.

Ours has been held in place with velcro for the past 35,000 miles. It's much easier to move when needed.

Yep, Velcro is an excellent option, Perry. I just picked up a roll of indoor/outdoor heavy duty 3 days ago, I've run out of what I've used thus far. Thanks to Lisa and Pete (at the MRR) for the recommendation. The epoxy is only on 1 small area of the box, along an external edge. Not that difficult to remove and I don't plan on doing so anytime soon. The box protects the shunt from damage and it consolidates the cables into a neat package. The nylon cable glands are IP 68 rated and secure the cables. I don't like loose ends, pardon the pun. Much of what I have done myself and what Laura's brother has made for us is to clean up what we have found in a brand new trailer. The same goes with the bus that I made for the battery/fuses/shunt connector at the positive terminal and the wiring that I redid for the electric brakes, which "disconnected" so to speak, on a trip home to Maplewood from Eugene, Oregon, where we took delivery. It's good to have options and we're fortunate that we have this forum and other Escape owners as a resource. I still have more to do. Great hobby. Cheers, Darrell
