Propane regulator and auto changeover

Put two full propane tanks on the trailer today but the gauge on the auto changeover is red when set to both tanks. So I think my regulator is done. Was trying to source the recommended replacement the Marshall Excelsior MEGR-253H but I'm having trouble finding it in Canada. Can anyone recommend a supplier or an alternative?

Thanks
Hugh

You cannot "set to both tanks" either the lever points left, or right. If its red, you may have opened the cylinder valve too quickly. Close the valve, remove the coupling from the tank and reinstall it. and very slowly open it. With the lever pointing to that tank, attempt to light the stove. It may take a while.

The Marshall Excelsior regulator is the best. You do not need the H variant of it, this is the high flow version and you could run everything in an Escape plus a firepit at the same time and not exceed the standard version.

A P following the model means it is packaged in a hard Plastic Pack for shipping protection, H indicates High flow and is OD green on the diaphragm housing, Standard regulator has no paint color, and the low flow version, still enough for everything you will be doing, is blue on the diaphragm housing and has an L after the model.

There is a shortage of regulators caused by the recall of the Winntek regulators, with everyone replacing them. Do not buy a Winntek or a Flame King (same regulator) as they are quite dangerous and have caused a number of fires. Just keep looking for the Marshall regulator.

regulator

I wasn't clear. I tried it with the switch set all the way to each tank but it shows red when pointing to each tank.

Thanks for confirming the Marshall is the way to go will keep looking.

regulator

One more question if I find the high capacity regulator in stock somewhere will it still work OK as a replacement?

replacement regulator

Couldn't source the recommended Marshall regulator locally so went with this Fairview. Everything seems to work fine will see how it lasts.

The old Marshall was working but pressure was really low at the appliances. Showed red on both tanks.

Getting trailer ready

So getting the trailer ready after inactivity. Propane, electrical and water have all been sorted, what else can go wrong?

I guess I will find out first time I take it out.

Fairview is one of the ones for which there's a massive recall right now, they are a rebranded Winntec. Apparently its specific to the Winntec 6020, which look like the one in the 2nd post on this 'stick-built' forum thread, https://www.keystoneforums.com/forum...ad.php?t=48982

Avoid ones with date codes from 2017-2021, supposedly 2022 production is 'fixed'.

after swapping regulators its a very good idea to check your low pressure propane side with a simple water manometer, it should be 11" of water column, with very little change as you turn propane appliances on and off.

To maintain 11" w.c. with 50% of the total appliance BTU demand I have found through experience this equates to 12" w.c. +/- with no load.

So can someone post a step-by-step guide to measuring propane pressure in our Escape trailers including equipment and where/how to connect it? I’m willing to spend some money on a manometer or whatever it’s called to be able to contribute at Escape gatherings.

a manometer is simply a U shaped loop of clear tubing half filled with water. one end is open, the other end is plumbed to a low pressure gas line somewhere, and twice the difference in height between the high and low side of the water in the "U" is the inches H2O pressure.

You’ll need a manometer like this

This thread should help if you want to measure at your refrigerator test port

4 feet of 1/2" clear vinyl hose, a bit of colored water, and a ruler work as well as that $55 digital gauge.

This is INCORRECT information!!!!!!!!!!!!

There are no recalls on the Fairview. It is made in Mexico and of decent quality (though they don't last as well as the Marshall)

The regulators that are SIMILAR to the Winntec (recalled) are certain models marketed by Erenco, and those marketed under the Flame King name.

The manufacturer in China refuses to recall them, the only recalls are the responsible RV manufacturers who realize the dangers of this regulator.
