putty used on battery box?

Anyone know offhand what that grey sticky putty around the wires out of the battery box under the rear bench of a E21C is? I am installing a Victor Smart Shunt, and need to reroute the ground wire, and reseal the box

Probably plumber's putty. Comes in a plastic container. Used for setting the drain in a sink.

oh yeah, I bet I have a tube of that left over, I reset the Escape's kitchen drain in the trailer, as it had this black rubber washer between the flange and the sink, and it stuck up too high and didn't drain. so I took it all apart, cleaned everything while I was at it... great local old hardware store, the old guy in plumbing aisle starts to tell me he doesn't like putty and is showing me washers, and I explain what I have, he goes oh, puts the washer away and hands me the putty, 'yeah, you'll want this'.

So I set the flange with putty, put the rubber washer UNDER the sink and used a proper sink wrench to tighten it down pretty hard so most of the putty squeezed out (and was wiped off). now it drains great.

now i need to figure out where to mount the smartshunt. I added a 18" negative cable from it to the battery - and connected the trailers original - wire to the shunt, then ran the + and mid sense wires to the other battery terminals. I have to mount it and dress the wires.

so at the very beginning, 15 amps is the big fridge in the 21 on DC. switch that off almost immediately, and it goes to the ~ 0.35 amps that couple of the inteior LEDs use. then the furnace comes on, its drawing 2.6 amps or so.

Per Reace (a few years ago), it is electrical conduit sealant. It can be purchased at Lowe’s for around $5 for a good sized block, and presumably at Home Depot, electric supply outlets, and possibly hardware stores.

Plumber's putty is definitely not what Escape used on our battery box to seal around the wires.

I mounted our shunt using velcro. It sits out of the way, but in the perfect spot for getting at the bolts, on top of the battery box lid, and has been there for the past 25,000 miles down the road.

Enjoy,

Perry

ETI used butyl to seal the battery box in my trailer.

This is what was used on my 2017 21 battery box.

It definitely is duct seal used on my battery box too. I used a fair bit of the stuff when working as a Power Systems Electrician. The nice thing about it compared to butyl tape is that it is not sticky, yet does form a good seal.

Maybe Escape started using it more recently? I can't really remember what was used in my 2009 19.

No. My 2015’s battery box is sealed with duct seal, or electrical conduit seal. Same stuff.
It can be found in the electrical department at Lowe’s. The electrician’s who wired my house said they use it because the electrical code requires the holes in headers where wire goes through to seal the hole, supposedly slowing the spread of fire. I thought that was ridiculous in my case; my house is steel. Steel framing, steel trusses, metal roof, steel siding. Only wood is in baseboards, kitchen cabinets, and window frames. Not much to burn nor for termites to consume. Granted, it looks like butyl, but when I asked Reace if it were butyl, he said conduit sealant and stated butyl was not appropriate for sealing the battery box. I would guess that means they never used it.

From what I found, plumber's putty hardens in a few hours and conduit putty remains malleable.
